Men's Gymnastics Tops Conference-Rival Illinois-Chicago 343.750-338.200

1.31.10 | Men's Gymnastics

McLaughlin leads with season-best all-around of 87.000

PHILADELPHIA—Temple's Mcgonigle Hall was the setting as the Temple men's gymnastics team cruised to an incredible win on Sunday, January 31 over conference-rival University of Illinois-Chicago and club-team SUNY Brockport. Temple's season-high 343.350 bested UIC's impressive 338.200, with SUNY Brockport scoring 280.850 for third, respectively.

Temple senior co-captain Patrick McLaughlin won the all-around with a season-best 87.000 points, while placing first on floor exercise, pommel horse and high bar.

The Cherry and White started the afternoon on the floor exercise, led by McLaughlin's 15.000 (stuck full-in; 1.5 to front double-full). Freshman Allan Malone chipped in a 14.800 (stuck Arabian double tuck) and senior Tyler Croteau contributed a 14.500 (whip-immediate double Arabian).

While Temple was putting on a tumbling clinic on floor exercise, UIC was showing its strength on the still rings, not letting a fall (triple back dismount) from team leader Andrew Stover, or a few missed strength elements from conference leader Nikolai Korepanov ruin the team's total of 56.350, the highest rings tally of the afternoon.

SUNY Brockport started the day on the pommel horse, led by Kenneth Byrd's 10.350.

In the second rotation, Temple moved to the pommel horse, showing smooth and aggressive swing, but suffered a fall and several rhythm breaks for a 54.600 total. McLaughlin was tops for the Owls with a 13.950. Malone was right behind with a 13.750.

UIC showed difficult tumbling on floor exercise, but problems with landings and staying in bounds proved to be its downfall, mustering a 54.850. For SUNY Brockport, Byrd was once again the team's high scorer with a 12.900 on the still rings.

The third rotation saw Temple move to the still rings, UIC to the pommel horse, and SUNY Brockport to the floor exercise. For Temple, freshman Alex Tighe led the event off with a solid 13.900, mainly due to his solid execution and tricky swing elements. Fellow freshman Asaaf Zoor, a member of the Israeli national team, added a 13.850 (stuck double layout dismount). Junior Blake Collins over-cooked his 1.5 twisting double tuck dismount but still assembled a contributing 13.800, tying teammate McLaughlin (trouble throughout maintaining control of the rings). Leading the effort for Temple was sophomore Chris Mooney, who seems well on his way back from a torn ACL suffered just prior to coming to Temple. Mooney rocked a tucked double-double dismount for an team-high 14.100.

UIC maintained its composure on the pommel horse, posting an event-high 54.600. SUNY Brockport was led by Byrd's 13.250 and teammate Ron Ayello's punch double front mount for 13.100.
Midway through the competition, Temple held a convincing lead of 169.050 to UIC's 165.800 and never looked back. SUNY Brockport remained in third with a three-event total of 134.400.

In the fourth rotation, Temple took to the vault and showed why they should be the top vaulting team in the conference, led by sophomore Evan Burke's meet winning 15.850 (double-twisting Yurchenko). McLaughlin launched a tucked Tsukahara double, but had to graze his hand on the mat for a 15.800. He, along with junior Scott Bloomfield (Kasamatsu 1.5) was the only athletes boasting 6.6 difficulty-rated vaults of the afternoon.

UIC faced the high bar and had to count several mistakes, thus taking them out of the competition. Ned Kamunura's 14.500 was good enough for second place overall on the event.

The fifth rotation saw Temple move to the parallel bars, led off by senior co-captain Jesse Kitzen-Abelson's 13.150. Logan Fiery, who has showed drastic improvements during training couldn't keep his double pike dismount on his feet, but showed a smooth interior in his routine, including a brand new straddle front 1 1/4 for a 13.200. Croteau posted a team high of 14.050, en route to a 54.550 team score.
UIC was solid on vault, erasing falls from the first two competitors but lacked the high difficulty values to bring in the top scores.

In the sixth and final rotation of the evening, Temple moved to high bar - UIC to the parallel bars. Freshman Brett Statman got things started right with a stellar 14.350 (triple-back dismount). Tighe showed some incredible one-arm swing elements, but a straddle Tkatchev proved to be his downfall. After the fall, Temple knew they had to hit, and hit is exactly what they did. Malone chipped in a 14.050, Collins caught a Geinger on his fingertips for a 13.750, setting up Bloomfield's 14.200 (layout Jaeger). McLaughlin sealed the deal with an intricate set, capped off with a double-twisting double layout for a 14.550.

UIC put up a valiant effort on parallel bars, and despite only competing five athletes (teams are allowed to put up six gymnasts per event, with the top four scores counting), tallied a solid 56.450 event score.
Temple's 343.350 score is the team's highest total since the 2009 season when they posted a 345.600 against Springfield.

Up next, the Owls will travel to Las Vegas, Nev. for the Winter Cup Challenge, held February 4 and 6.

Temple will face Springfield inside McGonigle Hall on Saturday, February 13 at 7:30 p.m. to headline the Temple Boys' Invitational, a three-day competition that attracts nearly 500 athletes to Temple's campus each year since 2004. The dual-meet against Springfield will be the Temple men's final home competition of the 2010 season, and will honor senior's McLaughlin, Croteau, Kitzen-Abelson and Christopher Bizub.
