#21/25 Temple To Host Rival St. Joe's Wednesday In A-10 Opener

1.4.10 | Men's Basketball

Two-time defending A-10 Champs look to bounce back from Kansas loss

Game Notes

PHILADELPHIA -
The #21/25 Temple Owls (11-3) open their Atlantic 10 Conference slate Wednesday night (7:00 p.m./The Comcast Network) against their biggest rival Saint Joseph's (4-8). The Cherry and White will be looking for its sixth straight win over SJU and lead the all-time series, 83-65.

Temple, under the direction of head coach Fran Dunphy, had its seven-game win streak snapped in an 84-52 loss to #1/1 Kansas Saturday. The Owls moved into the national rankings on Dec. 21 for the first time since 2001 on the strength of one of the nation's top defenses. Temple tops the A-10 and ranks among the nation's leaders in scoring defense (56.4 ppg.) and three-point percentage defense (.256).

Led by senior co-captains Ryan Brooks and Luis Guzman, Temple has controlled the tempo of the game on offense, and ranks fourth in the nation in fewest turnovers per game (10.2 ppg.). Brooks leads a balanced Cherry and White squad in scoring with a 15.4 average. Junior forward Lavoy Allen, a preseason first team All-Atlantic 10 selection, averages a double-double (10.6 ppg./10.2 rpg.) while sophomore guard Juan Fernandez, who has topped 20 points in three of the last five games, averages 14.1 points and 3.4 assists per game.

Saint Joseph's, under the direction of head coach Phil Martelli, has struggled of late, losing eight of its last nine to fall to 4-8 on the season. Senior guard Darrin Govens leads four Hawk double-figure scorers with a 12.7 average. Senior guard Garrett Williamson averages 11.7 points per game while topping the squad in assists (38), steals (21) and blocks (14). Junior forward Idris Hilliard tallies 10.8 points per game while freshman Carl Jones (10.7 ppg.) gives SJU a spark off the bench.

This contest counts only in the A-10 standings. The Temple-Saint Joseph's game on Feb. 20 at The Palestra counts serves as the Big 5 contest.
