Top two RPI teams in A-10 meet in early season clash

Game Notes

KINGSTON, RI
The top RPI two teams in the Atlantic 10 Conference square off in an early season battle Sunday afternoon (1:00 p.m./1210 AM WPHT) as the #21/25 Temple Owls travel to the Ryan Center to take on the Rhode Island Rams. Temple (12-3, 1-0 A-10) is ranked fifth according to realtimerpi.com (as of 1/7/10) while Rhode Island (12-1, 0-0) is currently fourth.

The Owls, under the direction of head coach Fran Dunphy, opened their A-10 schedule with a 73-46 trouncing of city-rival Saint Joseph's on Wednesday. It was the largest margin of victory in the series since January 3, 1985. Senior guard Ryan Brooks continues to lead the Temple attack, averaging 15.3 points per game while also spearheading a stingy defense that holds opponents to an A-10 low of 55.7 points per game.

Junior Lavoy Allen (11.2 ppg., 10.3 rpg.), who is on pace to become the first Owl to average a double-double since Ollie Johnson in 1970-71, provides interior strength. Sophomore guard Juan Fernandez (13.1 ppg., 50 assists), is among the A-10's top three-pointer shooters, ranking third in made threes (2.2 pg.) and fourth in percentage (33-80, .413). Senior Luis Guzman (4.4 ppg.) and sophomore Micheal Eric (4.1 ppg.), who is coming off a career-high 13 points in the SJU win, round out the Temple starting five.

Temple's A-10 leading defense will be put to the test against URI's high-flying offense which averages 79.1 points per game to rank second in the league. Head coach Jim Baron's Rams are led by senior guard Keith Cochran (16.5 ppg.). Junior Delroy James (13.5 ppg.), the 2009 A-10 Sixth Man of the Year, and senior Lamonte Ulmer (12.2 ppg., 7.2 rpg,) also average double figures.

Temple leads the series, 51-15. The teams split last season's meetings, each holding serve at home. URI has won four of the last seven between the teams.
