BALTIMORE, Md. - The October, 2010 edition of Lacrosse Magazine has a feature on Temple lacrosse head coach Bonnie Rosen who will be inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame later this month. The following is the feature article, written by Corey McLaughlin.

Bonnie Rosen's primary jobs as Temple women's lacrosse coach are to prepare and lead players during practices and games, and recruit the next incoming class. But when Temple hired her in 2007, Rosen often glanced at the surroundings in inner-city North Philadelphia and recognized the chance to make an impact beyond campus.

“Looking back, everything for me has been about opportunities,” Rosen said about her Hall of Fame playing career as a defender, which began in earnest at Harriton (Pa.) High School in suburban Philadelphia, blossomed at Virginia, where she became an All-American and won a national title in 1991, and continued as a three-time member of the U.S. World Cup team.

“The sport has given me so much,” Rosen said. “When I came to Temple, being in the city and seeing young girls that didn't have access to the sport makes it very easy for me to give back. It's at the top of my mission and my passion to help give these opportunities.”

So she has, regularly providing free clinics to players and coaches in Philadelphia elementary, middle and high schools. She's also brought lacrosse to small groups of children at the Please Touch Museum, whose programs are designed to encourage learning through play. Many in attendance have never seen or even heard of lacrosse, Rosen said.

Temple players participate in exhibitions in hopes of getting lacrosse added to school curriculums. Just seeing kids walk home from school around Temple's athletic facilities, located near traditionally low-income areas of the city, helped spur the idea.

As did meeting Tina Sloan Green, the former Hall of Fame Temple coach, Black Women in Sport Foundation co-founder and longtime advocate of growing the sport. She said Rosen was integral in the development of the city's first organized girls' lacrosse league in the spring of 2010. The six-team, state-sanctioned Philadelphia Public School League is a mix of public and charter schools, including Girls' High in North Philadelphia.

“One of the challenges is there are not enough coaches to go around,” Sloan Green said. “She was instrumental in creating coaching clinics and clinics for the students. Although she may have gone to school in the Main Line [in suburban Philadelphia], she has empathy for the urban Philadelphia public schools. She understands the potential in the city that's not being developed.”
