Owls Women's Tennis Sends Four to ITA Regional Championship

Stangl wins in singles main draw; Mavrina and Doms get victory in doubles play
NORFOLK, Va. – Temple's women's tennis team sent four players to the ITA Regional Championship, being held at Old Dominion University on October 21-24, 2010. Theresa Stangl, Jordan Batey, Alicia Doms and Yana Mavrina each represented the Owls in singles play; while Stangl and Batey, and Doms and Mavrina teamed up in doubles action.
In singles play, Stangl was the only TU player in the main draw, and the senior made quick work of her first opponent, defeating Virginia Commonwealth's Olga Terteac, 6-2, 7-6(2). Stangl will face second-seeded Erin Vierra of Virginia in the round of 32 at 9 a.m. on Saturday, October 23.
In the qualifying singles bracket, Mavrina fell to Richmond's Elizabeth Sims 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 and Batey dropped her match to Penn State's Carmen Sandor (6-3, 6-2). Mavrina came back to defeat Katie Haught of West Virginia in three sets, 3-6, 6-2, 10-4, while Batey was successful against Nika Khmolovska of Old Dominion, 7-6(3), 6-4. Doms also earned a singles win against Khmolovska's teammate Arina Alilueva, 6-3, 6-0.
In doubles play, Batey and Stangl lost their opening round match to Old Dominion's Joanna Dobrowolska and Melissa Esnal, 8-2. Mavrina and Doms teamed up to take down Norfolk State's Jenny Astbury and Gabbi Jonsson, 8-2, in the opening round before falling to eighth-seeded Shannon Betts and Martha Blakely of Virginia Tech, 8-2.
