AMBLER, Pa. – The Temple men's soccer team prevailed in a physical Atlantic 10 match with Rhode Island at Ambler Sports Complex Sunday afternoon, winning the contest 1-0. Seconds after being assessed a caution, sophomore Andrew Dodds gave the Owls' offense the spark it was looking for by netting the deciding goal in the second half.
Temple is now 5-7-2, 3-2-0 in A-10 play on the season while Rhode Island falls to 2-10-2, 0-4-1.
A scoreless first half was managed well by both sides. Each team posted four shots and forced the opposing keeper to make two saves.
The physical tone set in the first half carried over into the second. With both sides keeping the rough play alive, the Owls continued to pressure on the offensive end.
In the 65th minute, Dodds dribbled down the left sideline and took a shot that was blocked in front. After a missed clearing attempt, Dodds regathered the ball and ripped a shot right post to give the Owls a 1-0 lead.
Offensive pressure continued after the goal in the second half, when freshman Ryan Bradbury and sophomore Homero Rodriguez both just missed high on shot attempts. The Owls outshot their opponent 11-10 in the match.
Senior keeper Brett Mollon recorded two saves to pick up his fifth shutout of the year.
The Owls go on the road this week to face Saint Louis Friday, October 29 and No. 23 Charlotte on Sunday, October 31.
