Batey takes second place at first singles; Teams up with Stangl for second in doubles
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Senior Theresa Stangl and freshman Jordan Batey both had impressive weekends at the Saint Joseph's Invitational, held Friday-Sunday, October 1-3, 2010. Individually, Batey took second place in the first singles main draw, while Stangl won the consolation bracket of the first flight. The duo then teamed up to claim second at first doubles.
Freshman Carly Bohman also had a solid singles performance, winning the consolation draw at fourth singles.
Stangl lost her first match on Saturday, only to defeat all three of her foes in the consolation bracket over the next two days. After losing a tough three-set match to Mikelle Mancini of Villanova, 7-6 (4), 4-6, 10-3 in the main draw, Stangl went on to defeat Mary Washington's Megan Lawlor (6-2, 6-1), Morgan State's Alexis McCoy (6-1, 6-2) and Amanda Nelson of Villanova (7-5, 6-1).
Batey cruised to the semifinals of flight one, dropping just two games through two matches. She opened the weekend with a 6-0, 6-0 win against Courtney Goimarac of Mary Washington, before handling Drexel's Gozde Unkaya, 6-1, 6-1. Megan Doran of Delaware gave Batey a battle, but the rookie eventually prevailed in three sets, 6-3, 1-6, 10-5. Doran's teammate Dorothy Safron finally got to Batey with a 6-3, 6-0 defeat in the championship tilt.
Stangl and Batey defeated both their first and second round opponents by the same score of 8-5, before needing a tiebreaker to get past Delaware's Montserrat Ripoll and Ivana Petrich, 9-8 (3), in the semifinals. Doran and Samantha Carnall, also of Delaware, finally took the Temple pair down, winning the flight title, 8-4.
Bohman took a similar path to Stangl in the fourth singles draw, dropping her opening round match. It took three sets, but Rose Schlecker of Penn got the best of her 3-6, 7-6 (6), 10-9, to put the rookie into the consolation bracket. Once there, Bohman got past Mary Washington's Rachel Covington, 6-2, 7-6 (4), before winning by default to put her into the consolation championship match. In the final, Bohman earned a tough straight-set win against Kelly Domingo of Delaware, 7-5, 6-3.
Also competing on the weekend were graduate Christine Clermont, junior Mellana Cramer and freshman Alicia Doms.
Temple is active next at the ODU Invitational October 8-10, 2010, hosted by Old Dominion.
