A. Yurkovic nets in second half comeback attempt
Box Score
AMBLER, Pa. - Junior Allicia 'Sha' Yurkovic netted late in the second half during the Temple women's soccer team's late offensive surge, but a pair of goals from Saint Joseph's left the Owls with a 2-1 loss at Ambler Sports Complex on Friday afternoon. Temple is now 5-7-1, 0-2-1 in Atlantic 10 play on the season, while the Hawks move to 4-8-0, 1-2-0 A-10.
A turnover in their own end proved costly for the Owls, as SJU's Maggie Lupinski intercepted a clearing attempt and lofted a shot over Owls' keeper Tara Murphy in the third minute for a 1-0 lead.
Temple fought back, getting a dangerous chance in the 36th minute. Senior Julia Adden slipped a pass to 'Sha' Yurkovic, who hit a shot just wide left of the goal.
The score would remain 1-0 at the break. The Owls outshot the Hawks 7-6 in the period.
Saint Joseph's padded their lead in the 73rd minute, as Lupinski found a streaking Mo Hawkins. Hawkins toe-touched a pass just by Murphy to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead.
The Owls continued to show resiliency, fighting back to tally in the 87th minute. Adden fed a pass from the center to sophomore Jackie Krostek on the right side, who found Yurkovic open in front of the net. Yurkovic blasted a shot top right corner to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Temple continued to keep the pressure on and hold the ball in the SJU end, but could not find the tying goal as time expired.
"We played well at times," said Temple head coach David Jones. "The second half was some of the best soccer we have played all season. We dug ourselves in a whole and it was tough to get out of it. I'm proud of how hard we fought back and scored the late goal, and had a few chances to tie it up."
Murphy made two saves on the day, while SJU keeper Christine Neal was forced to make five.
On the game, the Owls outshot Saint Joseph's by a margin of 16-11.
Up next, Temple remains at Ambler for a home weekend hosting Dayton on Oct. 15 and Xavier on Oct. 17.
