PHILADELPHIA – Members of the Temple University football team took time to make several special deliveries on Wednesday in anticipation of next week's Thanksgiving celebration.
Head coach Al Golden, his wife Kelly, and players-- r-freshman WR Ryan Alderman (Downingtown, Pa.), r-freshman LB Mike Beatty (York, Pa.), freshman OL Joe Cenatiempo (Glen Mills, Pa.), r-freshman QB Chris Coyer (Oak Hill, Va.), r-freshman LB Michael Doty (Chalfont, Pa.), senior LB Amara Kamara (Newark, N.J.), senior OL Colin Madison (Villa Park, Ill.), freshman OL Doug Randall (Lewistown, Pa.), r-sophomore OL Martin Wallace (New York, N.Y.), senior P Jeff Wathne (Ledgewood, N.J.) -- delivered boxes and bags of collected canned food items to the Bethesda Project (722 North Broad Street, one of Bethesda Project's 12 residences and shelters).
The Owl players, coaches, and staff have been collecting canned food items the last two weeks during their fourth annual Thanksgiving Food Drive to aid homeless and formerly homeless men and women through the Bethesda Project.
Then the entourage stopped by St. John's Hospice (1221 Race Street). There the players unloaded full turkey dinners, including a 10-12 lb. turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, rolls, gravy, and pumpkin pie. The dinners were made possible through monetary donations. All players on the team donated their per diem to the cause.
“Thanks to the generosity of the Temple Football staff and players, Temple Football has set a new record for our Thanksgiving food drive by purchasing 50 Thanksgiving dinners, which will serve approximately 500 people in the Philadelphia community this Thanksgiving. This does not include the canned goods and non-perishable food items we have also collected during our drive,” head coach Al Golden said.
Temple (8-2, 5-1 MAC) closes out the regular season with a trip to Miami [OH] (6-4, 5-1) on Tuesday, Nov. 23 for a 7 p.m. contest at Yager Stadium. ESPN2 will televise the game live.
Temple Player quotes:
What are you most thankful for this year?
#52 LB Mike Beatty
“I'm most thankful for my family, my good friends, and my brothers on the football team.”
#11 QB Chris Coyer
“I'm most thankful for family, not just my family at home which is great. I have two aging grandparents that I love to spend time with when I can, but also my family here and how we've really come together as a team.”
#46 LB Michael Doty
“I am most thankful for my family and friends.”
#1 LB Amara Kamara
“I'm grateful for all the opportunities or I wouldn't be at Temple and to be able to give back. That's what my family is about, and I'm grateful to be in a program that allows me to do that.”
#70 OL Colin Madison
“I'm most thankful for having a big family. And I always get the hand-me-downs. I'm just thankful for people giving me stuff and for being able to give back to the community.”
#51 OL Doug Randall
“I'm most thankful for all the opportunities I've been given and for my family.”
#73 OL Martin Wallace
“I am most thankful for the opportunity to play football again.”
#49 P Jeff Wathne
“The thing that I'm most thankful for is my two parents and my sister. They've always been there to support me throughout these four years, especially being at Temple. I know without them I would not be where I am today.”
