Lake Karapiro, New Zealand - Temple University's Jason Read and the USA Men's Eight advanced to the finals of the World Rowing Championships with a win Wednesday in its repechage held on Lake Karapiro in New Zealand. Read, a 2003 Temple University graduate and a 2004 Olympic gold medalist, will compete in Sunday's afternoon's (Saturday Philadlephia time) A-Final.
"We had a terrific race yesterday to advance to the A-Final," Read said. "The race was very close and came down to the wire. New Zealand came second so the media coverage was intense as many of their athletes are from the area of the regatta. The roar of the crowd going into the final 500 meters of the 2,000 meters race was deafening."
New Zealand, rowing on its home training course, also advanced to the final. The final can be viewed live via webstream at 10:30 p.m. on Saturday by clicking this link.
