Temple continues its push for an A-10 Tournament bid
Box Score
AMBLER, Pa. – The Temple men's soccer team held onto an early lead long enough to down conference foe George Washington, 2-1, Friday afternoon at Ambler Sports Complex. The win keeps the Owl's Atlantic 10 tournament bid hopes alive and moves them to 7-8-2 on the year, 5-3-0 in conference play. The Colonials fall to 2-15-0, 0-8-0.
"It seems like it was an up and down game," said head coach David MacWilliams. "We had some intensity, we had some lax. I don't think we were consistent enought today. I think George Washington did a good job and made some dangerous plays. Bret (Mollon) came up with a big save at the end."
Ten minutes into the match, sophomore defender Billy Kappock found junior forward Tyler Witmer in the box with a lofted pass from about midfield. Witmer settled a ball off his chest, turned, and fired a shot that beat the GW keeper Jamie LaFleur to the far left post.
Temple added to its lead early in the second half, when in the 50th minute, as sophomore midfielder Andrew Dodds headed home his third goal of the season. Senior Max Kinderwater hit sophomore Matt MacWilliams in the right corner, who crossed the ball to Dodds who headed in the game's deciding goal.
George Washington responded in the 63rd minute as sophomore midfielder Seth Rudolph found the back of the net. Rudolph beat Owls' keeper Bret Mollon, who made a late break to a ball passed by junior forward Yoni Berhanu from midfield. Rudolph sidestepped the keeper sending in an empty net goal.
George Washington applied some pressure in the second half accumulating four shots in the half, however not enough to overcome the two goal deficit. The Owls outshot the Colonials 14 to six on the game, with seven and three on net, respectively.
Temple's senior keeper Bret Mollon (6-8-2) made two saves on the day, including a header from close range in the 85th minute.
The Owls are now currently tied for third in the Atlantic 10 standings with Fordham, St. Bonaventure and Saint Louis.
Action continues Sunday at Ambler Sports Complex when the Owls faces conference opponent Richmond. Kickoff is at 1:00p.m. and Temple's three seniors will be honored prior to the match.
