Temple Softball Gets Off to 1-1 Start in 2010 Season

Owls defeat East Tennessee State, drop game to host Georgia State
ATLANTA, Ga. - The Temple softball team got its 2010 season off to a promising start on Saturday, February 20, 2010. The Owls went 1-1 on day one of the Panther Invitational, hosted by Georgia State, at Bob Heck Field.
In their first game of the season, the Cherry & White picked up a 6-4 win over East Tennessee State. TU chased ETS pitcher Shelby Morris early, taking advantage of three walks to score two runs with just one out in the first. The Buccaneers next two pitchers didn't fare much better, giving up a combined seven hits and four more runs over the course of the game.
Offensively for Temple, Kristen Marris, Michelle Lerner and Kayla Cook each registered two hits. Marris included a home run in her three trips to the plate, while Cook belted two doubles.
Marris also threw a complete game for the Owls, scattering seven hits and allowing just three earned runs while striking out five.
In its second game of the day, TU took on the host team. The Panthers proved too much in a 10-0 defeat.
Cook continued a solid day at the plate, going 1-for-2. Crystal Nyman, Temple's starting pitcher in the game, also went 1-for-2.
Nyman was on the mound for the Owls for the first two innings, giving up six hits and six runs. Amanda Branco came on in relief for the final two, allowing four runs and six hits.
Temple is 1-1 on the season and will face Eastern Illinois at 10 a.m. on Sunday, February 21.
