CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Temple softball team finally got back on the field after a day full of rain canceled Friday's games, but the Owls outcome was not favorable. TU dropped a 4-1 game to Boston University in the first game of the day before falling to Ball State, 7-0, on Saturday.
Against BU, the Owls found themselves in an early 1-0 hole after giving up a run in the top of the first inning. Although the Cherry & White settled in and shutdown the Terriers for the next five innings, the offense was missing as the squad failed to register a hit until the fifth inning.
In that frame, Michelle Lerner led off with the single down the left field line. Christina Sykora advanced Lerner to second with a bunt, and a Kristen Marris ground out moved her to third. Lerner got TU on the board, scoring on a passed ball.
Unfortunately, that was all Temple got manage, and Boston University came out in the seventh to break open the tie game, scoring three runs on two hits and an Owls error. The Cherry & White did threaten in their final at-bat when Lerner reached on an error and Sykora doubled to put runners on second and third with one out, but BU pitcher Cassidi Hardy got out of it with a ground out and a strike out to end the game.
Hardy took the win, going seven innings, allowing just three hits and striking out 11. Marris was the losing pitcher, also throwing a complete game, allowing five hits and striking out seven.
In the second game of the day, it was the opponent who struck first again, when Ball State scored in the bottom of the third. This time, however, all of the scoring belonged to the Cardinals as they went on to plate two in the fourth and four in the fifth, while shutting out the Owls for the 7-0 win.
Audra Sanders was on the mound for BSU, tossing a one-hitter, striking out four and walking none. Crystal Nyman took the loss, going five innings, allowing seven hits and five earned runs.
The Owls are 4-9 overall and wrap up their trip to Florida with games against Quinnipiac (9 a.m.) and Cleveland State (11:15 a.m.) on Sunday, March 14.
