2010 Spring Outlook
After recording one of the greatest seasons in school history in 2009, the Temple Owls won't need much motivation to improve upon their efforts. The 2010 squad, under the guidance of fifth-year head coach Al Golden, returns 21 starters to 16 positions.
Following their 9-4 record, a 7-1 finish for the Mid-American Conference East co-championship, and a trip to the EagleBank Bowl against UCLA, the Owls are anxious to pick up where they left off last fall. They get their first chance on Saturday, March 20 when the 2010 team begins spring practice. The 15 sessions over the 34 days should help identify the team's needs before the freshmen join the ranks in August. The team's annual Cherry & White intra-squad scrimmage at Chodoff Field at the Edberg-Olson Football Complex is set for 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 17.
Taking the field this spring are 83 returning student-athletes, including 56 letterwinners and 16 starters. Joining the Owls are three members of the Local 215 (walk-on) program and six mid-year transfers.
In February, Temple signed 28 student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. Geographically, 27 signees came from within TU's recruiting footprint, of which 23 came from within three hours of the Temple campus. Nine student-athletes list their hometown in Pennsylvania and nine hail from New Jersey. Five signees hail from Southeastern Pennsylvania and eight from the Philadelphia metro area. Golden stated that he was going to pursue a MAC title with local talent, and he is holding true to that with signing numerous Pennsylvania and New Jersey players.
Twelve of the signees served as team captains (43%), while 18 of the 23 high school signees attended the Al Golden Football Camp (78%). Four of the signees—Aaron Hush, Zamel Johnson, Deon Miller, and Rod Streater— enrolled at Temple in January and will participate in spring drills. Additionally, two college transfers— Michael Doty (Maine) and Brandon Smith (Michigan) — have been added to the roster.
OFFENSE
The Temple offense returns 13 players to nine starting positions among the 31 lettermen. Under the direction of third-year offensive coordinator Matt Rhule, TU will continue to utilize a multiple offensive system designed to create a balanced running game and passing game.

A team captain in 2009, Charlton finished the season 107-of-213 for 1,390 yards and 10 touchdowns in nine starts. He is a tough, unselfish leader who has earned the confidence of the coaching staff.

In addition to the two starters, Rhule will guide redshirt junior Mike Gerardi and redshirt freshman Chris Coyer. Gerardi saw action in one contest last fall, while Coyer redshirted the season.
In his third season with the offensive line, coach Andrew Dees will guide an experienced troop. Named the team's offensive MVP in 2009, the o-line returns three All-MAC honorees.
On the left side, juniors Pat Boyle and Steve Caputo will compete at tackle, a spot vacated by senior All-MAC selection and four-year starter Devin Tyler.
