Nyman earns shutout victory in game two

AMBLER, Pa. – The Temple softball team closed out the weekend on a strong note, splitting a pair of games with visiting Drexel on Sunday, March 21, at Ambler Field. The Owls lost the first game, 2-1, but held on for a 2-0 victory in game two.
Despite the low scoring game in the opener, Temple had its opportunities. The Cherry and White pounded out 10 hits in the game, but stranded nine players on the base path. TU did get on the board first after recording four hits in the second and manufacturing a run out of it. Samantha Schoell delivered the two-out RBI single that scored Rachel Knable, who had led off the frame with a base hit.
Drexel's only runs in the game came off the bat of Ashley Botelho on solo homeruns in the fourth and seventh innings.
Hillary Allen (3-1) was the winning pitcher in the game, going 7.0 innings, striking out four and walking none. Kristen Marris (5-6) was the tough-luck loser, tossing all 7.0 innings, allowing just six hits and fanning four.
Temple grabbed the early lead again in game two when Danielle Fagan drilled her first home run of the season over the right centerfield fence. The Owls carried that 1-0 lead into the sixth inning, despite Fagan's homer marking their only hit of the game.
That changed in the sixth. Ali Robinson opened the frame with a single up the middle, followed by two more shots from Fagan and Knable to load the bases. One out later, pitcher Crystal Nyman helped herself with a run-scoring shot to left center to plate Robinson for the 2-0 lead.
Down to their last at-bat, the Dragons certainly made things interesting in the top of the seventh. Botelho continued her solid day, opening the inning with a single up the middle. Paige Collings followed with a double to centerfield to put runners on second and third with no outs. Nyman settled in and gutted out the win, however, forcing Drexel into a pop-out to first base, a strikeout and a line drive to second to end the threat and the game.
Nyman (2-8) earned the first shutout of her Temple career, allowing seven hits and striking out three in the complete game effort. Shyann Beach (1-2) took the loss, giving up five hits, fanning four and walking two.
