Temple softball wins 9-0 at Under Armour Invitational

Box Score

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Junior pitcher Kristen Marris fired a one-hitter, and the Owls pounded out a season-high 12 hits on the way to a 9-0 decision over Loyola-Chicago on day two of the Under Armour Invitational on March 6, 2010. Marris also helped herself at the plate, going 2-for-4.

The game was moving along quickly with neither team able to get to the others pitcher through the first three innings. Temple finally struck in the fourth, thanks to three hits in the frame. Marris led off the inning with a single to third base, and promptly stole second. Samantha Dungan sacrificed her to third, and after Ali Robinson reached with a single, Danielle Fagan drove in Marris with a single to right field.

The Owls went up 2-0 with another run in the sixth. After a Dungan single to center field and another Fagan single to right put runners on the corners, Kayla Cook delivered a run scoring single up the middle to score Dungan for the two run lead.

Loyola-Chicago had its best opportunity in the bottom of the frame when Lauren Gonzalez led off the inning with a double to left field. The Cherry & White got out of it unscathed, though, with a double-play and pop out to end the inning.

Temple broke the game open with seven runs on six hits in the top of the seventh to put the game out of reach for the Ramblers. A Samantha Schoell RBI single chased Loyola-Chicago pitcher Hilary Payne for Seana Stillson. Stillson surrendered three singles, one walk and four runs in only 0.1 innings of work before Payne came back in in relief. The break did not seem to help, as Temple delivered two-straight run scoring hits, including a double by Rachel Knable, before the Ramblers could get out of the inning.

Loyola-Chicago went down in order in its last at-bat to give TU the 9-0 win.

Marris was nearly flawless in the one-hitter, striking out seven and walking just one to improve to 2-1 on the season. Payne took the loss for the Ramblers.

The Owls, 3-4 overall, face Jacksonville at 5 p.m. later today.
