UPPER MARLBORO, Md. – Kristen McCarthy's double-double and a huge second-half run propelled the third-seeded Temple women's basketball into the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Tournament with a 63-54 win against sixth-seeded Duquesne (20-11). The Owls (23-7) will take on second seed Dayton in the CBS College Sports-televised semifinal at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 7.
McCarthy scored a game-high 21 points and grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds to tie her career high. LaKeisha Eaddy came up huge for Temple with 17 points including five three-pointers.
Temple led 6-0 before missing its next eight field-goal attempts and struggling with its ball handling. Duquesne eventually pulled ahead by five, 16-11, but the Owls then tied it up at 16-16 with eight minutes left in the first half.
The five points that tied the game became the beginning of a 14-0 run that gave the Owls a 25-16 lead at 6:21.
The lead was short-lived, as the Dukes battled and closed the half on a 17-8 run that put Duquesne up 33-31 at the break.
McCarthy started the second half with a three to put TU back in the lead, but the Owls' shooting struggles continued. After a 37-37 tie, Duquesne went on to lead by as many as seven, 45-38 at 13:02, before the offense finally picked up for Temple.
Back-to-back three-pointers from Eaddy and McCarthy started a 22-2 run that gave TU a 60-47 lead with 4:21 remaining, and Duquesne was unable to get closer than nine in the final minutes. The Owls hit five treys in the run, including two apiece by both Eaddy and McCarthy.
"We got our composure back in the second half and went on a run (Duquesne) couldn't recover from," said Temple head coach Tonya Cardoza.
McCarthy spoke of the first-half woes as well, saying, "there was a little bit of rust. We were excited, maybe too excited, but now we're ready to go."
Game Notes:
LaKeisha Eaddy tallied two steals to now take sole possession of first-place in career steals at Temple with 239…TU will be making its 10th straight A-10 semifinal apperance...Temple's 23 wins are the most since 2006-07…Freshman Victoria Macaulay grabbed a career-high seven rebounds…Owls lost 71-63 at Dayton on Feb. 20 in the most recent meeting between the two teams.
