STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Temple softball team traveled to Staten Island, N.Y. for a non-conference doubleheader against Wagner on Tuesday, April 13. The Owls won the opener, 6-3, and dropped the nightcap, 4-3.
In game one, TU fell behind the Seahawks early when the host team scored twice in the first inning. The Cherry & White capitalized on the error-prone Seahawks to cut that lead in half with a run in the fourth, and took a lead they would not surrender with a three-run fifth inning.
Despite giving up a run in the bottom of the seventh, Temple held on for the win. Senior third baseman Danielle Fagan was 3-for-4 in the contest with a homerun and three RBI. Freshman Kayla Cook also had a strong game at the plate, going 2-for-4 and driving in a run.
Freshman Crystal Nyman (4-9) pitched the complete game for the Owls, giving up just four hits over 7.0 innings and striking out four.
In the second game, Temple again took advantage of three Wagner errors to build a 3-0 advantage going into the bottom of the sixth inning. Two of those runs came off the bat of Cook when she sent a ball over the left field fence for the second homer of her career.
Wagner would not quit, however, and the home squad came back to plate a run in the sixth and three in the seventh to take the come-from-behind victory.
The Seahawks' rookie pitcher Terah DeBinder stifled the Temple bats, giving up just two hits in 7.0 innings of work while striking out seven. With TU's top pitcher, Kristen Marris, out due to illness, Nyman threw game two as well, giving up seven hits over 6.0 innings.
