CHARLOTTE, N.C.
– The Temple softball team headed to Charlotte for an Atlantic 10 doubleheader against the 49ers on Sunday, April 18. The Owls managed just one hit in the opener on the way to an 11-3 loss, and lost a pitchers dual in the nightcap, 2-0.

Charlotte jumped ahead early and never looked back, scoring three in each of the first three innings. The 49ers pounded out 10 of their 14 hits in those frames. While Charlotte's offense was cruising, the TU bats were silenced by the pitching of Emily Jeffery. Jeffery struck out eight of the first nine batters she faced to keep the Owls off the board.

The Cherry & White finally got to Jeffery in the top of the fourth. Kristen Marris reached on an error to start the inning, and one out later, Ali Robinson drew a walk to put runners at first and second. Danielle Fagan stepped in and homered to centerfield to  draw the team within 9-3.

That was the only hit the Owls would produce, however, and Jeffery took care of things by fanning four of the final five batters she faced to pick up the impressive win. In addition, the host team added two runs in the bottom of the fifth to force the early end to the game.

Jeffery improved to 17-7 on the year with the 5.0 inning, one hit, 13 strikeout performance. Crystal Nyman (5-11) took the loss for Temple, going 2.1 innings and surrendering eight hits and eight runs.

While the first game featured 15 total hits, the nightcap was a different story, with both teams combining to record just six hits. Once again, Charlotte got the offense going first when Tenaya Tucker led off the second with a double to centerfield. After Carol Buchan entered as a pinch runner, Keri Palma delivered a single through the right side to plate her for the early lead.

The 49ers added another run in the bottom of the fifth when Lindsey Holloman singled in Natalyn Blanton who had walked to lead off the frame. The Owls didn't get their first hit of the game until the top of the sixth when Christina Sykora hit a one-out single up the middle. She was stranded at first, however, as Katy Hackett induced two fly balls to get out of the situation.

TU threatened again in the top of the seventh with a leadoff single from Robinson, but Hackett again got out of it unscathed to preserve the 2-0 win.

Hackett (13-4) went the distance, allowing just the two hits while striking out seven. Marris (8-9) was the tough-luck loser, despite giving up just four hits and one earned run.

Temple is 14-21 overall and 3-5 in Atlantic 10 play. The Owls return to the field on Tuesday, April 20 for a non-conference doubleheader against Army at 3:00 p.m. Charlotte improves to 31-12, 10-2 A-10.
