AMBLER, Pa. –
The Temple softball team recorded 11 hits in two games, but could not get any runs across the plate, falling in shutout fashion in a doubleheader at Saint Joseph's on Wednesday, April 28. The Owls dropped the opener 5-0 and fell 2-0 in the nightcap.

Game one didn't start the way Temple would have liked with Saint Joseph's jumping out to a 1-0 lead after two. Monica Aguilar drew a walk to open the inning. After a Rochelle Christman sacrifice bunt moved her to second, Deanna Stinner delivered a single to left field to put runners on the corners.

What followed was a non-traditional play that put the Hawks ahead. Stinner made an attempt to steal second, and while doing so Aguilar made for home. Stinner alertly got herself involved in a run-down to allow Aguilar to cross the plate for the 1-0 lead.

SJU added two more in the bottom of the fourth. Brooke Darreff opened the inning with a single to center field. A sacrifice bunt put her on second and Christmas stepped in and delivered a homerun to centerfield to score herself and Darreff. The Hawks plated one run in the each of the next two innings, including another dinger off the bat of Christmas to lead off the sixth.

Saint Joseph's Erin Gallagher (18-7) earned the win, going the distance and allowing just three hits. Kristen Marris (10-12) took the loss, pitching 4.0, giving up four hits and three runs. Lauren Spoo came on in relief to go 2.0 innings, allowing two hits and two runs.

The Hawks grabbed the early lead in the nightcap as well, plating two in the bottom of the first. Dana Parks led off with a single to centerfield. Laura Cardone followed with another one-bagger to left field, and a Bernadette Moran sacrifice bunt put both runners in scoring position. A wild pitch allowed Parks to come in for the first run of the game, and advanced Cardone to third. Aguilar came through in the clutch again, sending a deep ball to centerfield, allowing Cardone to tag up for another run.

Temple threatened in the third, putting two runners on with two hits. Danielle Fagan singled to the pitcher before Rachel Knable sent a single to left field. Fagan moved into scoring position on Kayla Cook's long fly ball to right field, but Hawks pitcher Taryn Ashway recorded a strikeout to get out of the inning.

Both teams went scoreless for the next four innings. Saint Joseph's best chance came in the bottom of the sixth when the Hawks took advantage of two walks and a hit to load the bases with two outs. Marris got out of the inning unscathed, however, inducing a groundout to end the frame.

Down to its last at-bat, Temple put a runner on to start the inning when Michelle Lerner singled up the middle. Gallagher, who was on in relief, struck out the next batter and got two groundouts to end the game and earn the save.

Ashway picked up the win (5-7) for SJU, going 5.0 innings and giving up six hits. Gallagher picked up her first save of the season with 2.0 innings of work, allowing two hits. Marris dropped to 10-13 on the year, pitching 6.0 innings, giving up five hits and allowing two runs.

TU falls to 16-27 overall and 5-9 in the A-10. The team is back on the field on Sunday, May 2, in a doubleheader with La Salle beginning at 12 p.m. Saint Joseph's improves to 23-14 overall, 7-5 in conference play.
