Owls close out regular-season with doubleheader at Rhode Island on Sunday
AMHERST, Mass. – After three rain delays, the Atlantic 10 softball game between Temple and Massachusetts was finally called after five innings, a 5-0 decision in the Minutewomen's favor on Saturday, May 8, 2010.
TU had a runner on early when Kristen Marris started the game with a single up the middle, but that was the only hit the Owls would get the entire game. UMass pitcher Sara Plourde got out of the first inning threat by striking out the next two and then catcher Meghan Carta threw Marris out trying to steal second to end the inning.
The Minutewomen's first at-bat was much more successful as leadoff Carly Normandin sent a 1-0 pitch over the right field wall for the early lead. UMass would go on to score three more runs in the frame, thanks to three walks and one more hit.
Massachusetts made it a 5-0 game in the bottom of the second when Normandin scored her second run of the game on a RBI single up the middle off the bat of Sarah Reeves.
With UMass leading 5-0 just before the fifth inning, the game was delayed 33 minutes by lightning and rain. Temple did get one more baserunner in the top of the fifth when the game resumed when Danielle Fagan lead off with a walk, but Plourde again got out of it by striking out the side.
After the conclusion of the fifth inning, more rain and lightning moved in and the game was called final at 6:43 p.m.
Plourde (35-5) earned the win, going 5.0 innings, allowing just one hit and fanning 10. Lauren Spoo (1-3) took the loss, pitching 5.0 innings, giving up five hits and issuing nine walks.
