Owl Receives Community Service Recognition
NORTHBROOK, Ill. – Temple senior Amara Kamara (Newark, N.J.) is one of 112 nominees for the prestigious Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, the insurance company and the American Football Coaches Association announced on Tuesday.
The 112 student-athlete nominees are the most in the 19-year history of the community service award. The total eclipses the 106 nominees achieved last season, demonstrating the continued growth of a platform that is widely recognized as the most prestigious community service award in college football.
“In the third year of our partnership with the AFCA, Allstate, our employees and our agents continue to be inspired by the stories of class and character displayed by these young men,” said Guy Hill, vice president of sales and service for Allstate, who also serves on the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® voting panel. “We applaud the commitment of these 112 student-athletes to positively impact their communities with innovation, creativity and passion that reflects so well on their sport, and their respective institutions.”
From the nominees submitted by sports information directors, a special voting panel will select two 11-player Good Works Teams® – one comprising of players from the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision and another representing players from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, Divisions II, III, and the NAIA – to be announced in late September.
“For the third straight year, the AFCA is pleased to partner with Allstate in highlighting football student-athletes who have achieved outstanding success, both on and off the football,” said Grant Teaff, AFCA Executive Director. “From the record total of nominees that were submitted from colleges and universities around the country, it is apparent that collegiate football is producing some of the best and brightest that our country has to offer.”

A senior linebacker for Temple, Kamara is a 2010 preseason third-team All-MAC by Phil Steele. A third-team All-MAC honoree last season while helping the Owls to the co-MAC East championship, Kamara received the Athletic Department's 2010 Temple Teammates Award, given to student-athletes who have demonstrated leadership qualities in the area of community service, inspiring others to engage in similar selfless civic endeavors for the purpose of improving the quality of life for those in the local community. Additionally, Kamara accepted the 2010 T.E.A.M. Award, an acronym standing for Temple's Exceptional Acts for Mankind, for his team's exceptional community service efforts for the second consecutive year.
The three-year starter had the most community service events during the 2009-10 academic year with 12. Kamara has participated in the annual bone marrow donor drive, the Thanksgiving food drive, the Diamond Street clean-up, the EagleBank Bowl Boys' & Girls' Club visit, the One Child Saved campaign, Partnership Field Day, Owls for the Cure, Building Men Club, and the Shore Tour as well as numerous hospital visits and Ronald McDonald House visits. He enters the 2010 season with 30 career starts, the second most of any Owl. He is also a four-year member of football's Unity Council which serves as the leadership and the voice of the team.
“Amara is a tremendous talent on the gridiron. He has been a member of the starting lineup the previous three seasons and was the only true freshman to start every game in 2007,” head coach Al Golden said. “Amara has been the quintessential role model for our program and has set the standard for which all players should follow.”
Temple kicks off the 2010 football season in the second annual Mayor's Cup against Villanova at Lincoln Financial Field on Friday, Sept. 3 at 5 p.m.
Under fifth-year head coach Al Golden, the Owls return 56 lettermen, including 16 starters, from the 2009 squad that finished 9-4 overall and 7-1 in the Mid-American Conference en route to an appearance in the EagleBank Bowl.
