Owls Open Season on Sept. 3 with Villanova
PHILADELPHIA – The Temple University football team continued training camp on Wednesday at Edberg-Olson Hall.
Owl Outlook: Day 5 video
Owl Outlook is back for Day 5 of training camp, with today's focus being on the wide receiver position, joining us for interviews today are quarterbacks Michael Campbell (Edison, N.J.) and Nyles Bynum (Queens, N.Y.).
The receiving corps has a different look than it did at this time a year ago, though some of the major players are still donning the cherry and white. Campbell is entering his final season at Temple after leading the Owls in receiving yardage in 2009 with 419 yards and three touchdowns. At 6-2, 210-lbs he was responsible for some of the most memorable highlights of Temple's record-breaking campaign, including a jaw-dropping 44-yard touchdown catch against Villanova. Bynum, one of the senior leaders on the squad, is a devastating run blocker and great special teamer for the Owls, and earned himself the "Temple Tuff" No. 8 entering pre-season camp in 2009.
Wide receiver Joe Jones (Davie, Fla.) led the Owls in catches in 2009 after making 28 grabs for 387 yards and a score. The former running back was one of the Owls' biggest recruits in the 2007 class, and is one of the leaders on and off the field on offense. Redshirt sophomore C.J. Hammond (Washington, D.C.) has played in just one game so far in his career, but was impressive in spring ball and has continued to make strides. Senior Delano Green (Fredericksburg, Va.) has proven to be one of the most dynamic players on the team, particularly as a returner, where he took two punts back for six last season. Redshirt freshman Ryan Alderman (Downingtown, Pa.) may not have size, but he has the tools to be a very effective player at the college level. Senior Dy'Onne Crudup (New Haven, Conn.) is back after sitting out the 2009 campaign.
There has been much ado about the trio of new scholarship receivers to enter the fold, and for good reason, as all have shown plenty of talent. Junior Rod Streater (Burlington, N.J.), 6-6 freshman Deon Miller (Highland Springs, Va.) and the shifty Darryl Shine (Orlando, Fla.) all look like very promising players. Streater, who spent two years at Alfred State after graduating from Burlington Township High School in 2008, came to Temple in the spring and participated in spring practice. Joining him was Miller, who kept his previous commitment to the Owls and arrived in Philadelphia after an impressive stint at Fork Union Military Academy. Shine, who comes to Temple from Fullerton College in California, was an impact player on both offense and special teams out west, being named an All-Conference selection at both wide receiver and kick returner. Also in the mix will be walk-on Chris Burrell (Westwood, N.J.), who brings a winning tradition with him to North Broad Street after losing just one game in four seasons at Don Bosco Prep.
The Temple video staff will provide insight into the team's progress with video reports posted every day after practice.
Practices are closed to the general public.
Temple opens the 2010 season on Friday, Sept. 3 with Villanova at 5 p.m. in the second annual Mayor's Cup at Lincoln Financial Field.
