Owls Open Season on Sept. 3 with Villanova
PHILADELPHIA – The Temple University football team continued training camp on Monday at Edberg-Olson Hall.
Owl Outlook: Day 10 video
Owl Outlook is back for Day 10 of training camp, with today's focus being on the linebackers, joining us for interviews today are linebackers Tahir Whitehead (Newark, N.J.) and Elijah "Peanut" Joseph (Hartford, Conn.).
The linebacking corps will look a bit different in 2010 after losing two starters in Alex Joseph (now with the Green Bay Packers) and John Haley. However, now that they are under the tutelage of assistant head coach/defensive coordinator Mark D'Onofrio, you can expect that they will be ready to step up to the challenge. Whitehead has already proven that after being named the team's Most Improved Defensive Player after spring drills. He will be looking to start on the outside while improving on his 30 tackle, 4.5 TFL line from a year ago. Joseph has been one of the biggest sources of highlight plays for the Owls over the past two seasons as one of the heaviest hitters on the team. A thumper in the middle, Joseph will look to once again be named first-team All-MAC in 2010.
The other starter in the linebacking corps will be a familiar face getting used to an old position. Veteran Amara Kamara (Newark, N.J.) returns to outside linebacker in 2010 after playing with his hand on the ground as a defensive end last season. The senior has started 30 games for the Cherry and White, racking up 182 tackles in his career. Senior Jordan Martin (St. Louis, Mo.) will also make an impact and provide great depth to the unit. Another former walk-on, Stephen Johnson (Norristown, Pa), had a fantastic spring and is looking to make a splash on defense as well. Junior Quinten White (Philadelphia, Pa) has played mostly special teams in his first two seasons, but will be looking to take on a more featured role this year.
Much like every other position, there are a number of young Owls looking to make an impact in 2010. Sophomore Matt Falcone (Palmerton, Pa) was a special teams demon for Temple as a true freshman in 2009, while Marcus Green (Scotch Plains, N.J.) provided depth inside. Both will get additional playing time in their second years. Redshirt freshmen Blaze Caponegro (Wall, N.J.), Zach Kane (Toms River, N.J.), Gary Onuekwusi (Baltimore, Md.), Michael Doty (Chalfont, Pa.), Mike Beatty (York, Pa.), and Dan Van Norton (Berwyn, Pa.) all sat out the 2009 campaign, but will be in the mix for the 2010 season. There is also a group of true freshmen that are new to the fold. Two local kids highlight the class in Olaniyi Adewole (Drexel Hill, Pa.) and Wyatt Benson (Philadelphia, Pa.). Benson, who was the first player to commit to the 2010 recruiting class, represented Temple in the 2010 Global Bowl in France, where Team Stars & Stripes defeated the Brussels All-Stars 83-0. Adewole, a graduate of Upper Darby High School, had 137 tackles, seven sacks, and an interception as a senior. Walk-ons Anthony Petrucci (Downingtown, Pa.) and Brian DiGiovanni (Glen Mills, Pa.) also will be in camp. Petrucci was a two-time All-Conference selection at Downingtown East High School, while DiGiovanni racked up 92 tackles as an All-County player for Upper Darby in 2009.
The Temple video staff will provide insight into the team's progress with video reports posted every day after practice.
Practices are closed to the general public.
Temple opens the 2010 season on Friday, Sept. 3 with Villanova at 5 p.m. in the second annual Mayor's Cup at Lincoln Financial Field.
