Senior Ashley Carr leads Owls with a match-high 14 kills

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple volleyball team suffered a 3-0 loss to Delaware in its first match of the season, despite hard-fought second and third sets that could have gone either way. The Blue Hens took the win in the Temple Invitational with scores of 25-10, 25-23 and 28-26.
Temple senior Ashley Carr led all players with 14 kills, and made it a double-double with 11 digs. Ariel Pierre led five players who recorded double figures in digs for the Owls, tallying 21. Liz Prang notched a double-double with 33 assists and 18 digs.
Delaware's Chelsea Lawrence led her team with 12 kills, while Greta Gibboney recorded a match-high 24 digs.
Out-hitting Temple .300 to .100 in the opening set, Delaware was in control early on. The Blue Hens' Kim Stewart, who finished the match with 10 kills, knocked down five of those in the first set.
The Owls more than doubled their kills from the first set to the second, and at one point led 20-16 after Elyse Burkert's fourth kill of the set. From there, the Blue Hens rallied to tie the score at 20-20, and again at 22-22.
After Delaware went up 24-22, Carr came up with a kill to save one match point, but an error by the Owls allowed the Blue Hens to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Both teams recorded 19 kills in a neck-and-neck third set that saw 14 ties and eight lead changes. Both teams prevented the other from taking a match point before Delaware's Jess Chason knocked down a kill to put her team up 27-26, and a Temple error ended the match in favor of the Blue Hens.
Temple will return to action tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. as the Owls face Virginia in the final match of the invitational. Virginia will face Delaware earlier in the day, at 1:00 p.m. in McGonigle Hall.
