Owls rally to win the fourth set but come up short in the fifth

Box Score (PDF)

PHILADELPHIA – After rallying from being down two sets to one, the Temple volleyball team dropped a heartbreaker in the fifth set to visiting Virginia to conclude the Temple Invitational. The Cavaliers (3-0) defeated the Owls (0-2) by scores of 19-25, 26-24, 25-19, 21-25 and 15-11.

UVA's Simone Asque, named to the All-Tournament Team, led all players in the match with 21 kills. Her teammate, libero AJ Cushman, recorded an impressive match-high 30 digs. Jessica O'Shoney tallied nine kills and led Virginia with a .400 hitting percentage, and was also named to the All-Tournament Team.

Temple's Ariel Pierre, who recorded 43 digs over TU's two matches, was named to the All-Tournament Team along with Ashley Carr who led the team in kills both nights. Carr knocked down 15 kills against Virginia and made it a double-double with 13 digs. Collin Wallace also notched a double-double with 13 kills and 13 digs, as did Liz Prang with 30 assists and 16 digs.

Balanced offense helped Temple pull ahead towards the end of the first set. The Owls led 19-18 before taking six of the final seven points to win 25-19, with two kills coming from Prang including the set-winner.

The close second set saw 11 ties, the final one at 22-22. The Owls then looked poised to go up 2-0 for the match after back-to-back kills put Temple up 24-22, but it was not to be as the Cavaliers rallied to take the final four points.

Both teams struggled to hit well in the third set, and although the Owls recorded more kills than Virginia, it was Temple's errors that proved to be its undoing.

TU was down six in the set, 20-14, before pulling to within two at 20-18. But it was all Virginia from there, as the Cavaliers closed on a 5-1 run to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

Down by as many as six early in the fourth set, Temple needed a lift and got it from junior transfer Rikia Trischuk, who served up three straight aces during a 6-0 TU run that put the Owls ahead, 11-10. The teams were tied six times after that, the last at 18-18 before Temple closed out on a 7-3 run.

Freshman Gabriella Matautia knocked down the set-winning kill, finishing off a set in which she recorded six kills and zero errors.

Virginia's Emily Rottman came on strong in the final set to lift her team to the win, breaking an 8-8 tie with three kills in the following four points. The Owls pulled within 13-11, but another kill from Rottman followed by a Temple hitting error ended the match in favor of the Cavaliers.

Temple's next match will be locally televised by CSN (Comcast), as the Owls travel across town to Penn for their first match of the Big 5 Tournament next Friday, Sept. 3 at 7:00 p.m.
