Volleyball Falls to Penn in its Big 5 Tournament Opener

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple volleyball team lost at Penn in the Big 5 Tournament opener for both teams, as the Quakers swept the Owls by scores of 25-20, 25-20 and 25-21. The win puts Penn at 1-0 for the season, while Temple drops to 0-3.
The Owls will be looking for their first win tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. when they face La Salle. Temple is 41-0 all-time against the Explorers, and defeated them three times in 2009.
Senior Jess Antosz led Temple with 10 kills and a hitting percentage of .421, along with a team-high four blocks. Senior Ariel Pierre recorded a team-high 14 digs.
Temple got a strong run going in the third set against Penn, but otherwise struggled to get momentum going against the Quakers.
After the sixth tie of the first set at 16-16, a 3-1 run for Penn put the Quakers ahead for good. Temple got within one point at 21-20, but Penn's Julia Swanson knocked down two kills as part of a 4-0 run for her team to end the set.
The second set was tied for a seventh time at 13-13, but another run by Penn put it out of reach for the Owls.
After getting down 23-13 in the third set, Temple rallied with a 6-0 run to cut the margin to four, but could get within no fewer than three as the Quakers finished out the set and the match.
