Owls Open Season on Sept. 3 with Villanova

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple University football team continued training camp on Monday at Edberg-Olson Hall.

Owl Outlook: Day 3 video

Owl Outlook is back for Day 3 of Training Camp, with today's focus being on the quarterback position, joining us for interviews today are quarterbacks Chester Stewart (Hanover, Md.) and Chris Coyer (Oak Hill, Va.).

Stewart was the Owls' lone quarterback signing in the 2007 recruiting class, and signed after attending one of the first Al Golden Football Camps. The redshirt junior started four games under center in 2009, throwing for 514 yards and two touchdowns while running in two more scores. Stewart finished spring practice at the top of the depth chart, but is receiving stiff competition from the second-year Coyer. The redshirt freshman spent the year on the sidelines last year, but was impressive in spring ball. As a senior at Oakton High School in Virginia in 2008, Coyer passed for over 1,400 yards and 32 touchdowns, while running for over another 1,200 yards. His athleticism and intelligence make him a player to watch for in the future.

Quarterback Mike Gerardi (Parsippany, N.J.) is in the mix as well as one of the top back-ups. The redshirt junior saw action in one game in 2009 (Kent State), after dressing for every contest. In high school, Gerardi was a first-team All-State honoree at quarterback at Parsippany Hills, throwing for over 2,300 yards and 35 scores as a senior. Post-graduation, Gerardi attended Kimball Union Academy, where he led the squad to a 9-0 record while completing 90-for-119 for 1,200 yards and 16 touchdowns with no interceptions.

Two freshmen in Connor Reilly (Fairfax, Va.) and Bret Gillespie (Downingtown, Pa.) are impressing thus far in camp as well. Reilly, at 6-2, 200-lbs, was an All-District selection at W.T. Woodson High School in 2009 before signing on with the Owls on signing day. Gillespie joins Temple after a celebrated career at Downingtown West High School, where he was a two-time AAAA All-State selection.

The Temple video staff will provide insight into the team's progress with video reports posted every day after practice.

Practices are closed to the general public.

Temple opens the 2010 season on Friday, Sept. 3 with Villanova at 5 p.m. in the second annual Mayor's Cup at Lincoln Financial Field.
