Owls Open Season on Sept. 3 with Villanova

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple University football team continued training camp on Sunday at Edberg-Olson Hall.

Owl Outlook: Day 2 video

Owl Outlook is back for episode 2, focusing on the newcomers wide receiver Rod Streater (Burlington, N.J.) and defensive end Taray Carey (Whitehall, Pa.).

The Owls once again reeled in one of the top recruiting classes in the MAC in February, a class that was well-represented with the opening of training camp.

At quarterback, Connor Reilly (Fairfax, Va.) was the Owls' only signal caller to sign in February, though he will be joined by walk-on Bret Gillespie (Downingtown, Pa.). Reilly, at 6-2, 200-lbs, was an All-District selection at W.T. Woodson High School in 2009 before signing on with the Owls on signing day. Gillespie joins Temple after a celebrated career at Downingtown West High School, where he was a two-time AAAA All-State selection. Joining them in the backfield is Myron Myles (Ambler, Pa.), who enters the fold after originally committing to Vanderbilt of the SEC. Myles graduated from Wissahickon High School, running for over 2,200 yards as a high school senior in 2009.

The wide receiver position may have seen the most improvement, with the additions of Streater, 6-6 wideout Deon Miller (Highland Springs, Va.) and the fleet-footed Darryl Shine (Orlando, Fla.). Streater, who spent two years at Alfred State after graduating from Burlington Township High School in 2008, came to Temple in the spring and participated in spring practice. Joining him was Miller, who kept his previous commitment to the Owls and arrived in Philadelphia after an impressive stint at Fork Union Military Academy. Shine, who comes to Temple from Fullerton College in California, was an impact player on both offense and special teams out west, being named an All-Conference selection at both wide receiver and kick returner. Also in the mix will be walk-on Chris Burrell (Westwood, N.J.), who brings a winning tradition with him to North Broad street after losing just one game in four seasons at Don Bosco Prep. The Owls also added an imposing target to the passing game at tight end in 6-5, 240 lb Tyler Johnson (Ringwood, N.J.). Johnson's size and athleticism made him one of the top tight ends in the state after being a two-way star at Lakeland High School.

The offensive line, which was given the Owl Award as the team's MVP at the 2009 Awards Banquet, welcomes a couple of new faces as well. Among those is Big 33 participant Adam Metz (Hummelstown, Pa.), who at 6-5, 310 lbs already looks the part. He's not the only intimidating addition up front however, because with Joe Cenatiempo (Glen Mills, Pa.), Elijah Grant (Piscataway, N.J.) and Martin Wallace (New York, N.Y.), there is some major beef to contend with in the trenches. Walk-on Jake Lane (Harrison Valley, Pa.) will be looking to crack into the rotation as well.

On the defensive line, the Owls have added Carey, who was a two way threat at both defensive end and tight end at Whitehall High School. He will be joined on the outside by the athletic Sean Daniels (Blackwood, N.J.) and the stout Jaimen Newman (Colonial Heights, Va.). Daniels was a three-sport star at Highland Regional High School as well as a playmaker on the gridiron, racking up 61 tackles and 3.5 sacks to go with over 1,300 yards rushing. At 6-4, 275 lbs, Newman made major waves at Matoaca High School as a senior, picking up 40 tackles and 14 sacks. Looking to wreak havoc inside is Dante Weaver (New Brunswick, N.J.), who at 6-2 and a hefty 320 lbs already looks like a mauler inside. Joining him inside will be the pride of California in defensive tackle Byron Rutherford (San Diego, Calid.), as well as true freshmen Terrance Brown (Jackson, N.J.) and Wanemi Omuso (Burlington, N.J.).

At linebacker, two local kids highlight the class in Olaniyi Adewole (Drexel Hill, Pa.) and Wyatt Benson (Philadelphia, Pa.). Benson, who was the first player to commit to the 2010 recruiting class, represented Temple in the 2010 Global Bowl in France, where Team Stars & Stripes defeated the Brussels All-Stars 83-0. Adewole, a graduate of Upper Darby High School, had 137 tackles, seven sacks, and an interception as a senior. Walk-on's Anthony Petrucci (Downingtown, Pa.) and Brian DiGiovanni (Glen Mills, Pa.) also will be in camp. Petrucci was a two-time All-Conference selection at Downingtown East High School, while DiGiovanni racked up 92 tackles as an All-County player for Upper Darby in 2009.

In the secondary, several players were added and will be looking to make an impact. Defensive back Brian Burns (Bowie, Md.) has good size and athletic ability, while Norristown's Anthony Robey (Norristown, Pa.) has the speed to burn. Marquise Goods (Orange, N.J.) will undoubtedly be making a splash as well. Zamel Johnson (Staten Island, N.Y.), formerly of Hofstra University, enrolled in the spring and has already entrenched himself in the rotation at cornerback. Johnson isn't the only transfer though, with Abdul Smith (Trenton, N.J.), formerly of Rutgers, making it onto the camp roster as well. Walk-ons David Abror (York, Pa.), Brett Pierce (Sicklerville, N.J.) and Ryan Woods (Glen Mills, Pa.) will also be making an impact in camp.

On special teams, the Owls added a national prospect in punter Andrew Cerett (Huntingdon, Pa.) on signing day. Cerett was ranked as the eighth-best punter in the entire nation by Scout.com this past year, averaging 42.2 yards on 39 punts in 2009.

The Temple video staff will provide insight into the team's progress with video reports posted every day after practice.

Practices are closed to the general public.

Temple opens the 2010 season on Friday, Sept. 3 with Villanova at 5 p.m. in the second annual Mayor's Cup at Lincoln Financial Field.
