Volleyball Falls in Four Sets to North Dakota at Montana Invitational

Newcomers Burkert and Wallace lead Owls with 14 kills apiece

MISSOULA, Mont. - After losing momentum at the end of the third set, the Temple volleyball team was unable to recover and ultimately lost 3-1 to North Dakota (7-2) in its first match of the Montana Invitational. The Owls (2-5) held on for a 26-24 win in the first set, but lost the next three by scores of 25-22, 26-24 and 25-18.
Freshman Elyse Burkert and junior transfer Collin Wallace led Temple with 14 kills apiece, and Burkert recorded her second-straight double-double with 11 digs.
Temple recorded an impressive 18 kills with just error in the first set, and led by as many as nine, 17-8 before an 8-0 run by the Fighting Sioux put them within one. The Owls later failed to capitalize on two set points, but with the score tied at 24-24, an error by UND followed by a kill from Burkert put Temple up 1-0 in the match.
There were a number of ties early on in the second set, but after the final tie at 17-17 it was North Dakota who pulled away with a string of five kills, putting the set out of reach for Temple.
The Owls dug themselves into a hole early in the third set, down 4-0 and 8-3, but rallied to tie the score for the first time at 13-13. Four ties followed before the Owls started to pull away, and Temple found itself with three set points at 24-20.
Two kills by UND combined with two errors by Temple tied things up at 24-24, and the Fighting Sioux kept it going by closing out the set with two more kills.
North Dakota had its best hitting percentage in the fourth set while the Owls struggled with errors and trailed nearly the whole way.
Temple will look to rebound on Saturday with two more matches. The Owls will take on Utah State at 12:00 p.m. (EST) and will conclude the tournament by playing host Montana at 9:00 p.m. (EST).
