Volleyball Suffers Tough Five-Set Loss to the Lady Griz to Conclude Action at the Montana Invitational

MISSOULA, Mont. - In a tough, five-set loss to Montana, serving proved to be the downfall for the Temple volleyball team as the Owls held a 2-1 set lead in the match but lost the final two sets to the Lady Griz (3-7). The Owls (2-7) were led by Elyse Burkert with 16 kills, and Burkert was named to the Montana Invitational All-Tournament Team after strong play in Temple's three matches.
The Owls finished with 69 kills compared to Montana's 54, but Temple committed 13 service errors and had only three aces, compared to six of each by the Lady Griz.
After nearly doubling Montana's kills (15-8) in the first set to take an easy, 25-17 win, Temple fell behind early and never fully recovered as the Owls lost the second set, 25-20.
In a third set that was tied 19 times, Temple had three set points saved by Montana. The Owls finally won after a kill by Jess Antosz was followed by an error on the Lady Griz that gave TU the 29-27 win and a 2-1 lead in the match.
The fates reversed in the fourth set as it was the Owls who fought off two set points but ultimately committed an error that gave Montana a 26-24 win.
In the fifth and final set, the teams were tied 7-7 before Montana pulled away. The Lady Griz scored the final three points of the match by knocking down two kills and getting a block.
Junior Collin Wallace notched a double-double for Temple with 15 kills and 11 digs, while senior Ariel Pierre was impressive defensively with a match-high 29 digs. Senior Cayleigh Ashman recorded 12 kills along with a team-high seven blocks, and Antosz finished with 12 kills and a hitting percentage of .458.
Temple will be back in action next weekend at the UNC Invitational in Durham, N.C. First up, the Owls will face Appalachian State on Friday, Sept. 17 at 4:30 p.m.
