Burkert nearly notches a double-double, Pierre leads all players in digs
KINGSTON, R.I. – The Atlantic 10 season did not start the way the Temple volleyball team hoped it would, as the Owls (2-12, 0-1) suffered a 3-0 loss at Rhode Island (10-3, 1-0) on Friday night.
The Rams dominated all the way through set one, eventually winning 25-13. They won the next two sets by scores of 25-22 and 25-22.
Ariel Pierre recorded a match-high 14 digs and Elyse Burkert nearly notched a double-double with a team-leading nine kills along with 11 digs. Kayla Wilson did damage for Rhode Island, knocking down a match-high 16 kills and hitting a match-high .452.
Rhode Island hit an impressive .400 as a team in the first set, knocking down 18 kills while the Owls managed only six.
Temple came out much stronger in the second set, matching Rhode Island with 10 kills. The Owls had to dig out of an early five-point deficit at 10-5, but the score was later tied five times, the last at 21-21. The Owls stayed within a point at 23-22, but a URI kill followed by a TU error put the Rams up 2-0 in the match.
After the third set was tied at 7-7, Rhode Island used a 6-0 run to pull ahead and the Owls never fully recovered. Temple held off four match points to come close at the end, but the Rams finally sealed it and won 25-22.
Temple will return to the court tomorrow at Fordham in a 7:00 p.m. match.
