ALBANY, N.Y. - Late goals from sophomore Jackie Krostek and junior Allicia 'Sha' Yurkovic nearly mounted a comeback for the Temple women's soccer team (2-3-0) in its match with Albany (2-2-0) on Friday evening, but three goals from the Great Danes were too much to overcome.
Albany broke the scoreless tie in the 22nd minute, as Shayla Bergeron took a pass from Chelsea DeVerna and beat Owls' keeper Tara Murphy on a breakaway. The Owls would hold the Great Danes scoreless for the rest of the half, but would be outshot 12-3 in the first.
The Great Danes came out of the break hot, scoring in the 46th and 55th minutes. Less than two minutes into the second half, UA's Casey Marks headed in a pass off of a corner, then minutes later Bergeron struck again with her second goal of the game.
Temple got on the board in late in the second half, tallying seconds apart in the 74th and 75th minutes. Krostek took a pass from senior Steph Ferretti just outside of the box, finshing for the Owls' first goal. Krostek again was the catalyst for the scoring in the 75th minute, setting up Yurkovic to bring the score within one at 3-2.
The Owls could not summon up one more scoring chance, falling by the final score of 3-2. Temple was outshot 24-10 in the contest, with Murphy making six saves on the day.
Up next, the Temple women's soccer team makes a trip south to the East Tennessee State Tournament. The Owls will take on host East Tennesee State on September 10, then doing battle with Miami (OH) on September 12.
