Eight Temple Owls Named to Philadelphia Inquirer’s Academic All-Area Football Team

Record Number of Owls Earn All-Area Honor
PHILADELPHIA – A school record eight Temple Owls have been named to the 2010 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Football Team, the newspaper announced on Tuesday.
Senior TE Vaughn Charlton (Landenberg, Pa.), sophomore DB Justin Gildea (Hollidaysburg, Pa.), senior DB Jaiquawn Jarrett (Brooklyn, N.Y.), senior NT Elisha Joseph (Hartford, Conn.), sophomore PK Brandon McManus (Hatfield, Pa.), junior WR Rod Streater (Burlington, N.J.), sophomore OL Martin Wallace (New York, N.Y.), and sophomore OL Stephen Yuan (Glenside, Pa.) are among the 26 student-athletes named to the team of players from the 10 Delaware Valley institutions that sponsor football. The team is selected by the sports information offices of the 28 area institutions from the Philadelphia metropolitan area.
Joseph was TU's only repeat recipient. He also was honored in 2009. The eight honored Owls were the most since the Academic Team began in 2005. Temple's previous high was seven honorees in 2006.
Team captain Charlton received the 2010 Owl Club Academic Award. He was a 2010 Honorable Mention Academic All-MAC selection. Named a 2010 preseason first-team All-MAC selection at tight end by Phil Steele's College Football, he was cited on the 2010 Athletic Director's Honor Roll. Last fall Charlton played in all 12 games with two starts. The human resource management sports a 3.17 grade-point average.
Gildea played in 12 games with eight starts at strong safety. He also played on the kickoff, punt, and punt return units. Cited on the 2010 Athletic Director's Honor Roll, Gildea finished fifth on defense with 58 tackles and two fumble recoveries. He has a 3.09 GPA in business management.
A 2010 Pro Football Weekly All-American, team captain Jarrett was named the Owls' 2010 Team MVP. A two-time first-team All-MAC honoree, Jarrett started all 12 games at free safety and played in every game of his collegiate career with 43 starts. The Owls' top defender with 74 tackles, Jarrett was named to the prestigious Jim Thorpe Award Watch List. He was the recipient of the 2010 Captains' Award, the National Football Foundation?&?College Football Hall of Fame?Scholar-Athlete Award, and the 2010 Enterprise Spirit & Sportsmanship Award. He sports a 3.13 GPA in criminal justice. He will play in the 2011 Under Armour Senior Bowl on January 29 in Mobile, Ala.
Team captain Joseph was a first-team All-MAC and Academic All-MAC honoree. Taking over at nose tackle last fall, he started all 12 games at his new position. He finished with 44 tackles on the year. A 2010 CoSIDA Academic All-America nominee, Joseph earned Academic All-MAC recognition in 2009 and 2010. He was named to the 2009 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Football Team. The team's 2010 George M. Illman Award recipient for leadership on and off the field, Joseph is majoring in criminal justice and has a 3.37 GPA.
McManus was a 2010 All-MAC selection by Phil Steele. Earning MAC Specialist of the Week honors following the Villanova game, he played in all 12 games and finished the season as the team's scoring leader with 70 points. He made 31-of-32 extra points. Also cited on the 2010 Athletic Director's Honor Roll, McManus has 3.10 GPA in kinesiology.
Streater was named the team's 2010 newcomer of the year. In his first year in the Cherry & White, Streater played in all 12 games with nine starts. He finished second in receiving with 481 yards and four touchdowns on 30 receptions. Streater has a 3.15 GPA in strategic and organizational communication.
In his first season as an Owl, Wallace played in all 12 games with two starts at left tackle. He was a 2010 Honorable Mention Academic All-MAC selection. The offensive lineman transferred to Temple after two years at Northeastern which discontinued its football program. Wallace sports a 3.34 GPA in criminal justice.
Yuan was a 2010 Honorable Mention Academic All-MAC selection. He saw action in all 12 games. The right guard also played on the field goal unit. Cited on the 2010 Athletic Director's Honor Roll, he has a 3.30 GPA in environmental science.
