Temple Well-Represented at 2011Pan American Games

GUADALAJARA, Mexico — Temple University will be well represented at the 2011 Pan American Games which commences today with the opening ceremony. Temple's women's rowing coach Jason Read ('03), who carried the American Flag at the opening ceremony, will be joined by Owl alums Marcus McElhenney (03') and Joe Spencer (05') on the men's rowing team. Current TU assistant track coach Shameka Marshall is one of two long jumpers competing for the USA women's track team.
“This is historic for USA Rowing, as well as for Temple,” said Read. “Momentum is building like a freight train (for the game). We are all excited to get started.”
The three Temple rowers will all be part of the USA men's 8 with coxswain while Read and Spencer will also be part of the men's 4 without coxswain. Rowing competition is scheduled to begin Saturday on Lake Zapotlan in Guzman City, Mexico. Racing kicks off at 9 a.m. local time (8 am ET).
The women's long jump final is scheduled for October 26th in Guadalajara.
The Pan American Games is a prestigious event that takes place every four years in the year preceding the Olympic Games. This year's event, which will run from October 14-30, will feature competition in over 30 sports. The Games are expected to see more than 6,000 athletes from 42 nations.
