STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Temple's cross country programs competed in the Penn State National Invite on Friday morning. On the women's side, the Owls placed 27th as a team. Freshman Jenna Dubrow led the Owls for the third time in as many races this season, finishing the 6K meet in 23:55, to place 107th overall.
“We did a nice job working as a pack today,” coach Matthew Jelley said. “The men went first this morning and with today being a rough day in terms of the weather, it made running conditions tough for the women when it came time for them to run. The weather hurt us early on, making it difficult for us to get in good position early.”
West Virginia took first place in the meet, as senior Kate Harrison and junior Kaitlyn Gillespie finished first and second overall, respectively. Host school Penn State wrapped up the race in third place.
Junior Dierdre MacFarlane came in second among Temple runners and 138th overall when she crossed the finish line in 24:37. Taylor Goldsworthy came in 154th place among all individuals, helping her have the third fastest time for a Temple runner on Friday at 25:07. Classmate Erin Casey finished behind her eight seconds later, allowing her to take 162nd place. Sophomore Anna Pavone rounded out Temple's top five finishes in 25:42 to secure 173rd place in the race. Freshman Samantha Shepard completed the 6K meet three just three seconds later, causing her to place two spots behind Pavone.
“We got off to a rough start, which had to do with the weather and the conditions of the course,” Jelley said. “From this race today, we're able to learn from it so that we hopefully don't make these mistakes again when we're in the bigger and faster races in the next few weeks.”
Temple's next meet will be in two weeks when it heads to Charlotte, N.C, for the Atlantic 10 Championships on Oct. 29.
