CHARLOTTE, N.C. – On the women's side of the running of the 2011 Atlantic 10 Cross Country Championships, Temple finished the race in 12th place out of the 14 schools in the conference. Once again, freshman Jenna Dubrow was Temple's fastest runner at a meet. The first-year runner placed 54th out of 128 runners in time of 19:00 in Saturday's meet at Frank Liske Park.
Dubrow has now been the top-finisher for the Owls in all four of their events this season.
As a team, Temple totaled for 357 points to help it beat out George Washington (413) and St. Bonaventure (443). La Salle, who has been mourning the loss of late head coach Charles Torpey, beat out Dayton, 69-84, to take the 2011 championship.
“I thought our ladies had a solid performance today, but the fact that we're a young team showed up today,” head coach Matthew Jelley said. “As a whole, we need to get out to much quicker starts. We ran the second half as good as anyone else, but we didn't get off to the kind of start that we would have liked.”
Completing the race inside the 19-minute mark were sophomores Anna Pavone, Taylor Goldsworthy and junior Deirdre MacFarlane, as each placed in the top 100, finishing 81st, 89th and 96th, respectively.
Sophomore Erin Casey rounded out Temple's top five with her finish time of 20:17, while sophomore Stephanie Dorantes (20:18), junior Rayna Kratchman (20:28), freshman Samantha Shepard (20:38), senior Karrie Finn (20:46) and sophomore
Kelly Broadbent (21:19) all competed in the 5K meet.
“Our 12th place finish is an improvement from recent years and that reflects how hard the women have worked,” Jelley said. “A year ago we only had two runners place in under 20 minutes, so with having four do that today in the same meet, it's a big improvement.”
From here, Temple will now prepare for the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships on Nov. 12, which will be held in Princess Anne, Md. on the campus of the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore.
