Men's Soccer Drops Bonnies, 2-1, in A-10 Road Match

10.30.11 | Men's Soccer

BRADFORD, Pa. - Having its game relocated due to St Bonaventure's home facitlity being left in unplayable condiitons after  inclement weather fell over the course of the past week, Temple Men's Soccer found a way to keep itself in Atlantic 10 Tournament contention with its 2-1 win over the Bonnies. The Owls were playing down a man late in the game, but that turned out to not be a disadvantage afterall, as sophomore Nolan Hemmer tallied the game-winning goal for the Owls in the 86th minute.

Coming out of a scoreless first half, sophomore Vaughn Spurrier put the Owls in the lead in the 48th minute. Spurrier capitalized when he took the ball off classmate Ryan Bradbury before dribbling past the St. Bonaventure keepr to dump in the gaping net.

The Bonnies answered in the 76th minute when Kyle McTurk put back a ball that bounced off the post, allowing him to even the score a one apiece.

"We went out there and battled hard today and had chances," head coach David MacWilliams said. "Both teams had chances, especially in the first half. Nolan came up with the goal for us with a little over three minutes left while we played a man short, so it was a win we had to really fight to get, so we're happy that we were able to finish that in order to go back home with a win."

Between the 22nd and 24th minute, the Owls had two strong chances to break the scoreless knot when Jake Lister pelted a shot right at the post before Spurrier had a shot that went wide of the net.

The Bonnies controlled the second half, as they fired 13 shots during the final 45 minutes. St. Bonaventure outshot Temple  19-12 in the match.

With the win, the Owls now have 12 points in the A-10 standings, which puts them in a four-way tie with Saint Louis, Dayton and La Salle for the sixth and final slot in the conference tournament seedings.

Temple has wrapped up its 2011 road slate and will now return home next weekend when its host La Salle in a critical A-10 matchup on Friday at 2:30  p.m.
