Box Score
RICHMOND, Va. – In their Atlantic 10 opener, Temple men's soccer battled back from Richmond's early 2-0 lead with three unanswered goals in the final 42 minutes. Starting for just the second time since returning from injury, junior Cody Calafiore made his presence felt. The Herman Watch-List nominee had a hand in sophomore Nolan Hemmer's game-tying goal in the 58th minute. Minutes later, Calafiore silenced the crowd at Robins Stadium in the 88th minute when he scored the goal that put Temple in front for the first time all night and in position for the 3-2 win. With the victory, the Owls even their record to 5-5-0 on the year and are off to a 1-0-0 start in A-10 play.
Richmond got out to a commanding 2-0 lead in the first half. Sean Baker opened the scoring in the sixth minute before Luis Perez provided a tally for the Spiders in the 32nd minute.
From that point, Temple's defense was relentless. The Spiders had a fair amount of possession time due to 18 committed fouls by the Owls. However, the extra possession time didn't seem to have any kind of an impact, as Richmond failed to land a shot on sophomore goalkeeper Bobby Rosato for the remainder of the contest.
Senior Tyler Witmer cut into the Spider lead in the 48th minute when he tallied Temple's first goal of the game from five yards out. In the 58th minute, Hemmer headed a shot into the net to beat Thomas Hand, allowing him to knot the game at two apiece.
The Owls put up a season-high in the shots category, outshooting Richmond 20-7.
Calafiore's three-point night gives him nine on the year, making him the Owls' leading scorer this season.
Temple will round out its opening weekend of conference play when it heads to the nation's capital for the second straight weekend on Sunday to take on the George Washington Colonials at 1:00 p.m.
