FREEPORT, Bahamas – It was another huge near-comeback for Temple women's basketball as the Owls cut a 20-point deficit down to four, but could not quite close the gap and lost 71-59 to #5/4 Texas A&M in their first game of the Junkanoo Jam Tournament. The Aggies improve to 5-0 overall while Temple drops to 2-3 and will face St. John's at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.

BJ Williams scored 19 points to lead the Owls while Kristen McCarthy recorded her second straight double-double with 16 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Shey Peddy led all players with five assists, also scoring eight points and recording two steals.

Adaora Elonu led four Texas A&M players who scored in double figures with 23 points.

Ball handling proved to be a struggle for the Owls the entire game. In the first half they committed 16 turnovers, more than their average in an entire game so far this season, and Temple finished with 27 turnovers to A&M's 12 as the Aggies finished with a 30-8 advantage in points off turnovers.

The Aggies took an early 10-point lead and then built as much as a 16-point lead, 32-16 with six minutes remaining in the half, but by halftime Temple was within 12, 36-24.

The shooting of Williams kept Temple in the game as she led all players at the half with 12 points including 2-of-3 from three-point range. McCarthy had scored seven points by half and led all players in the game with six rebounds. Temple out-rebounded Texas A&M 18-16, but forced the Aggies into only five turnovers.

With a 12-4 run to open the second half, Texas A&M opened up a 20-point lead on the Owls in the first four and a half minutes.

Peddy hit back-to-back treys to start what became an 11-2 run for Temple that put the Owls within 11 ending with a layup from Victoria Macaulay.  After an Aggie bucket, the show continued as Macaulay made two more baskets and Tyonna Williams hit a big three-pointer in yet another 11-2 run for the Owls, putting them within four, 54-50 with 8:43 remaining.

The excitement came to a halt as the Aggies regained control with an 8-0 run to pull back ahead by 12, but McCarthy gave Temple another life with seven straight points and the Owls got the deficit back to just four, 62-58. It was as close as Temple could get as Sydney Carter scored a bucket for A&M, and chances at the free throw line helped the Aggies continue to widen the gap.

St. John's was defeated by Iowa, 60-52 in the tournament's first game, and will be Temple's second and final opponent of the weekend.
