Seven Temple Owls Named to Philadelphia Inquirer’s Academic All-Area Football Team

Owls Lead All Schools With Most All-Area Honors
Senior DB David Abror (York, Pa.), sophomore WR Ryan Alderman (Downingtown, Pa.), sophomore DB Tomas Cabrera (Hanover, Pa.), senior OL Pat Boyle (Towson, Md.), junior DB Justin Gildea (Hollidaysburg, Pa.), senior WR Rod Streater (Burlington, N.J.), and junior OL Martin Wallace (New York, N.Y.) are among the 25 student-athletes named to the team of players from the seven Delaware Valley institutions that sponsor football. The team is selected by the sports information offices of the 28 area institutions from the Philadelphia metropolitan area.
Gildea, Streater, and Wallace repeat as recipients of the academic award. The trio also was honored in 2010. The seven honored Owls are the second-most since the Academic Team began in 2005. In 2010 eight Owls were honored.
Abror has a 3.10 grade-point average in accounting. Cited on the 2011 Athletic Director's Honor Roll, he is a member of the Owls' Mid-American Conference leading defense which ranks No. 3 nationally in scoring defense. Abror joined the program as a walk-on in the spring 2010.
Alderman has a 3.54 GPA in business. A 2011 Capital One Academic All-America nominee, he was cited twice on the President's Honor Roll. Alderman has played in every game of his collegiate career. Also playing on the punt, kickoff return, and punt return units, he had a career-long 48-yard reception in the win at Ball State.
Cabrera has a 3.19 GPA in speech, language, and hearing science. Cited on the 2011 Athletic Director's Honor Roll, he joined the team as a walk-on in the fall of 2010 and moved from wide receiver to defensive back in 2011. Cabrera, a member of the Owls' Mid-American Conference leading defense, also plays on the kickoff and punt return units.
Boyle has a 3.15 GPA in psychology. A first-team All-MAC honoree this fall, he was cited on the 2011 Athletic Director's Honor Roll. Boyle has started all 12 games at left tackle this fall, helping Temple to the most rushing touchdowns and yards in a season.
Gildea has a 3.06 GPA in business management. Cited on the 2011 Athletic Director's Honor Roll, he has started all 12 games at strong safety this fall. Leading the Owls with three interceptions, Gildea has played in every game of his collegiate career.
Streater has a 3.15 GPA in strategic and organizational communication. Cited on the 2011 Athletic Director's Honor Roll, he was named the team's 2010 Newcomer of the Year. Streater has played in every game over the last two seasons since transferring from Alfred State Junior College.
Wallace has a 3.14 GPA in criminal justice. Cited on the 2011 Athletic Director's Honor Roll, he was a 2010 Academic All-MAC Honorable Mention selection. Wallace has started all 12 games at right tackle this fall, helping Temple to the most rushing touchdowns and yards in a season.
Temple (8-4 overall, 5-3 MAC) faces Wyoming (8-4, 5-2 MWC) in the 2011 Gildan New Mexico Bowl on Saturday, Dec. 17 at Noon MT (2 p.m. ET) at University Stadium. ESPN will televise the game live in HD.
