Cummings-Danson one of eight inductees in the Class of 2011
PHILADELPHIA - Gail Cummings-Danson, already a member of the Temple Athletics Hall of Fame, has now been inducted into the Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter of the U.S. Lacrosse Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2011. Cummings-Danson was one of eight honored at the February 5, 2011 induction ceremony.
Mike Busza (inducted as a Player), Brian Dougherty (Player), Robert Buzz Lynn (Umprire), John Nostrant (Coach), Lee Allen Krug (Coach), Lynn Anderson (Player/Service), Joan W. Salmon (Official/Service) and Cummings-Danson were honored before a throng of over 300 attendees.
Cummings-Danson grew up in Huntsville, Ontario and came to Temple in the mid-1980s when Tina Sloan-Green was coaching one of the top programs in the country.
"To be associated with this outstanding group is truly humbling," said Cummings-Danson, who helped the Owls win the 1988 National championship. "Growing up in Huntsville, I would have never thought I'd be in this place today. It was my coaches (at Temple), Tina Sloan-Green and (then-assistant) Sue Stahl who pushed me and gave me the opportunity to excel. More importantly, they motivated me to shine as a person."
Cummings-Danson was the captain of Temple's 1988 NCAA championship lacrosse team and was the Most Valuable Player in the NCAA Tournament. She was a three-time All-American and three-time All-Region selection, as well as a GTE Academic All-American in 1988. During her four years as a member of the lacrosse team, Temple had three undefeated regular seasons and reached the final four of the NCAA Tournament four times.
Cummings-Danson holds numerous Owl records including most points/career (378), most points/season (118), most goals/career (289), most goals/season (88), most assists/career (89) and most assists/season (30).
She graduated cum laude in 1988 from the college of health, physical education, recreation and dance and holds master's and doctoral degrees from Temple.
Cummings-Danson played on Canadian National and World Cup Teams, as well as on USA National and World Cup Teams in the 80's and 90's. She was an assistant coach at Temple in 1988-89.
Already a member of the Temple Athletics Hall of Fame, Ontario Lacrosse Hall of Fame and National Lacrosse Hall of Fame, this was Cummings-Danson's third hall of fame honor.
Six players and/or coaches with ties to Temple were already in the Eastern PA Chapter of the U.S. Lacrosse Hall of Fame. They are current Temple head coach Bonnie Rosen (Class of 2009), Amanda O'Leary (Class of 2007), Anne Sage (Class of 2003), Aggie Stegmuller (Class of 2002), Kathleen Geiger (Class of 2001) and Alice Putnam Willetts (Class of 1998).
Geiger, Putnam Willetts, Sage and Stegmuller are also members of the Temple Athletics Hall of Fame.
