SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The exceptional post play of #9/7 Notre Dame proved too much for Temple women's basketball, as the Fighting Irish handed the Owls a 77-64 loss to end Temple's season in the NCAA Second Round. The Irish (28-7) will now advance to the Sweet 16 while the Owls finish their season at 24-9 overall.
Shey Peddy led Temple with 21 points, while Kristen McCarthy and Natasha Thames scored 16 and 12 points, respectively. Thames' career-high 14 rebounds led all players in the game.
Natalie Novosel and Devereaux Peters led Notre Dame with 17 points apiece, and Peters made it a double-double with a team-high 12 rebounds. Also scoring in double figures for the Irish were Skylar Diggins with 15 points, Becca Bruszewski with 12 points and Natalie Achonwa with 10 points. For the game, the Irish out-scored Temple in the paint 44-20 and out-rebounded the Owls 42-34.
Notre Dame made some early runs to keep the Owls at bay, but through the midway point of the half Temple was able to counter with mini-runs of its own.
Unfortunately for the Owls, the Fighting Irish only increased their shooting efficiency towards the latter part of the half, finishing at 59.3 percent to Temple's 33.3 percent. Temple's final lead of the half was 14-13 on a three-pointer from Wallace at 11:48.
With a three-point deficit for the Owls, 27-24 at five minutes remaining, Notre Dame closed out the half on a 14-5 run. The Irish led by as many as 15 before a last-second trey from Peddy narrowed the margin to 12 at halftime, 41-29.
Peddy and Diggins led their teams with 11 points apiece at halftime, with Peddy going 3-of-4 behind the arc in the first half.
After Notre Dame widened the gap back to 15 points early in the second half, Temple used a quick, 7-0 run to come back within eight, 46-38 at 17:49. Wallace recorded back-to-back steals on Irish turnovers, leading to the last five points of the run.
Notre Dame increased its lead back to 12, 50-38, before the Owls went on a 9-2 tear and came within five, 52-47. It was as close as Temple would get, as the Irish responded with a 10-0 run to begin putting the game out of reach.
The Owls fought down the stretch and came within single digits on one occasion near the halfway point, and then within 10 in the final three minutes of the game. Temple struggled mightily at the free throw line in the final five minutes, preventing the Owls from narrowing the margin any further.
