Burkert's 22 Kills Lead Volleyball to Thrilling 3-2 Victory Over Stony Brook in Season Opener

PHILADELPHIA - Sophomore Elyse Burkert knocked down a career-high 22 kills with zero errors in leading Temple volleyball to a thrilling, 3-2 win over Stony Brook in the team's season opener. The Owls (1-0) were up 2-0 in their first match of the Temple Invitational before the Seawolves (0-1) tied things up, and the teams played to extra points in the final set.

Temple won the first two sets 25-17 and 25-18 before Stony Brook turned around to win the third and fourth by scores of 25-18 and 25-20. An intense fifth set saw 10 ties before Temple finally won, 18-16 with a kill from Burkert followed by a block from freshmen Alex Schmitt and Tiffany Connatser.

Collin Wallace and Gabriella Matautia knocked down 13 kills apiece for the Owls, with Matautia adding 11 digs for a double-double. Connatser also recorded a double-double with 52 assists and 15 digs, while Chelsea Tupuola led all players with a career-high 28 digs.

Four players recorded double figures in kills for Stony Brook, led by Alicia Nelson with 18 kills and 21 digs.

Temple hit 13 kills to Stony Brook's 10 in a 25-17 win in the first set of the season. Wallace led all players with five kills in the first set while Tupuola registered eight digs. The Owls picked things up in the second set with 14 kills and only three errors, while the Seawolves matched their nine kills with nine errors. Temple held the lead throughout the entire set as the Owls cruised to a 2-0 lead in the match.

Stony Brook took advantage of miscues by the Owls in the third set and took an early lead it never relinquished. The Seawolves' Greta Strenger led her team with five kills and zero errors in the set.

Down by as many as nine early in the fourth set, Temple eventually rallied back to come within three, 23-20 before the Seawolves took the final two points to even the match at 2-2.

Temple took a 12-9 lead in the fifth and final set before Stony Brook came back to tie things up at 13. The Seawolves went on to have three match points that Temple was able to fight off. When the Owls finally had match point after a kill from Burkert, Schmitt and Connatser came up with the block to end the match in Temple's favor.
