PHILADELPHIA - Despite double-doubles from Collin Wallace, Tiffany Connatser and Gabriella Matautia, the Temple volleyball team suffered its first loss of the season to Temple Invitational champion South Carolina, 3-0 on Saturday afternoon. The Gamecocks won the match 25-15, 25-22 and 25-18 with 12 kills from Hanna Forst and a double-double of 10 kills and 19 digs from Tournament MVP Juliette Thevenin.
Wallace led the Owls (1-1) with 13 kills along with 12 digs, while Matautia knocked down 10 kills and recorded a team-best 14 digs. Connatser led Temple with 33 assists and registered 11 digs, while Elyse Burkert tallied 10 kills for the Owls.
Temple junior libero Chelsea Tupuola recorded 11 digs and was named the tournament's Most Valuable Libero.
South Carolina led throughout the first set, led by Forst with six kills and Thevenin with four as the two helped the Gamecocks out-hit the Owls, .324 to .189.
Temple rallied in the second set and after getting down 11-6, the Owls came back to tie the score at 13-13. The teams were knotted three more times, the last at 20-20. The Gamecocks led by just a point at 23-22 before a Temple error followed by a kill from Thevenin ended the set and put South Carolina up 2-0 for the match.
The Owls had the third set tied up at 12 before the Gamecocks used a 7-1 run to take the lead for good.
Temple will be back in action next weekend at the Big 5 Tournament at The Palestra on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania. First up for the Owls is a match against host Penn at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 2.
