PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (The Palestra) - After rallying to claim the third set of the match, the Temple volleyball team could not hold on to the momentum as the Owls (1-2) ultimately lost 3-1 to Penn (1-0) in their first contest of the Big 5 Tournament.
Senior Collin Wallace led Temple with a match-high 17 kills, while junior Chelsea Tupuola recorded a team-best 15 digs. Freshman Tiffany Connatser recorded her third double-double in as many collegiate matches, with 29 assists and 10 digs, while sophomore Gabriella Matautia was strong with 14 digs and eight kills.
Penn's Lauren Martin, who finished the match with a team-high 16 kills, knocked down seven of those while committing no errors in the first set. The Quakers led the entire way, making a run midway through to take control of the set.
Wallace had her strongest performance of the match in the second set with six kills and zero errors, but an early eight-point deficit was too much for the Owls to overcome. Temple came within two points at 16-14, but Penn rallied back to take nine of the final 11 points.
An intense third set saw nine ties and three lead changes. The Owls led by seven at 21-14, but attack errors allowed Penn back into the set. The Quakers narrowed the margin to two for the final time at 24-22, but the Owls escaped with the set by notching the final point on a Penn service error.
The Quakers committed a match-low three errors in the fourth set and began to pull away halfway through. Service errors proved costly for the Owls in trying to gain momentum, and Penn went on to record the win in its first match of the season.
The Big 5 Tournament continues Saturday, as the Owls face La Salle at 10:00 a.m. and Villanova at 1:30 p.m.
