PHILADELPHIA - The first weekend in September means its time for the annual Big 5 Volleyball Tournament, set to take place at The Palestra on Penn's campus this Friday and Saturday, Sept. 2 and 3. The Owls are 1-1 so far in 2011 after a season-opening, 3-2 win vs. Stony Brook and a 3-0 loss to South Carolina in Temple's own tournament last weekend.
Junior libero Chelsea Tupuola was named the Most Valuable Libero of the tournament after averaging 4.88 digs per set and recording a career-high 28 digs against Stony Brook. Sophomore Elyse Burkert averaged 4.00 kills per set to lead the team, while senior Collin Wallace was close behind at 3.25 kills per set. Freshman Tiffany Connatser recorded assist-dig double-doubles in each of her first two collegiate matches and led the Owls with 10.62 assists per set.
Villanova started the season with a 3-1 win against Maryland at the Tennessee Invitational, but dropped its other matches to Tennessee (3-0) and Ohio (3-2). Senior libero Kim Maroon was named to the Lady Vols All-Tournament Team after collecting 78 total digs, an impressive 6.50 digs per set.
Like Villanova, La Salle won its first match of the season with a 3-0 sweep of St. Peter's in the Explorers' own Invitational. La Salle went on to lose to Canisius and Providence over the weekend, and also dropped a 3-0 decision to Towson on Tuesday night to put its overall record at 1-3 so far.
Penn will play its first match of the season when it faces Temple on Friday night. The Quakers, who went 17-11 a year ago, have won the last two Ivy League titles and have appeared in the last two NCAA Tournaments.
