Batey Takes Second at Flight B Singles
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Temple women's tennis team got the fall season started by competing at the Harvard Invitational on Friday-Sunday, September 16-18, 2011. The Owls sent six players to the event.
Sophomore Jordan Batey had a solid weekend for TU, advancing to the singles B flight final. Batey won her first round match, 6-0, 7-6 (1), before upsetting the top-seeded Sami Lieb in straight-sets, 7-5, 6-3, in the semifinals. Batey eventually dropped her final match to Jessica Podlofsky of UMass, 7-5, 7-6 (6).
Sophomore Yana Mavrina opened her season with a 6-4, 4-6, 10-4 win over her opponent at the singles A flight. Mavrina then dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision in the second round.
Carly Bohman and Maame Ame Osei both earned wins in the first round of the singles, C flight. Bohman defeated her opponent, 6-3, 7-5, and Osei picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win. Both fell in the second round.
In doubles play, Mavrina and Alicia Doms defeated their opponents, 8-1, at flight A doubles before dropping an 8-5 decision to Hideko Tachibana and Kristin Norton in the semi's.
The Owls are in action next at the Cissie Leary Invitational, held September 23-25, 2011 at UPenn.
