Doms and Mavrina Successful on Day One
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Temple's women's tennis team was active with competition at the 15th Annual Cissie Leary Invitational on September 23-25, 2011. The event is hosted by the University of Penn.
Sophomores Alicia Doms and Yana Mavrina got TU started on the winning side in the Round of 32 doubles bouts, defeating Marie-Frederique Bedard and Sarah Henderson of Penn State, 8-5. The duo came up against a solid Penn tandem of Stephanie Do and Alex Ion in the Round of 16, falling 8-1.
Also successful in their opening doubles match were newcomers Agnese Rozite and Rebecca Breland. The junior and freshman duo picked up an 8-1 victory over Drexel's Aysenil Orhon and Mel Reyes before dropping a disappointing 8-7, 7-6 (6) decision to the third-seeded pair of Nicole Bartnik and Bianca Sanon of Columbia.
In singles play, Mavrina and Doms again each advanced. Mavrina, seeded sixth in the singles bracket, opened play with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Ryann Young of Cornell in the Round of 64. She followed that with a 6-1, 6-0 straight-set win over Bedard and will face Kristen Roth of Penn State at 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning in the Round of 16.
Doms won a straight-set Round of 64 match over Zeynep Mafa of Drexel, 6-1, 6-2, before hanging on for a super tiebreaker win over Columbia's Chelsea Davis, 6-1, 4-6, 10-3, in the second round. Doms will take on the fourth-seeded Sol Eskenazi in the third round at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.
