Mavrina advances to singles quarterfinal round

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Temple women's tennis team completed play at the Cissie Leary Invitational, hosted by Penn, on Sunday, September 25. The Owls' Yana Mavrina was the most successful competitor, advancing to the quarterfinal round in singles play.

After going 2-0 on day one of the event, Mavrina squared off against Kristen Roth of Penn State in the Round of 16, coming away with a 6-4, 6-1 decision. The sophomore finally got more than she could handle when she faced third-seeded Nicole Bartnik of Columbia in the quarterfinals. Bartnik needed three sets, but came away with a 6-4, 5-7, 10-5 win.

Alicia Doms was TU's only other player still active in the main draw on the second day. Doms drew fourth-seeded Agustina Eskenazi from Penn in the Round of 16, dropping a 6-4, 6-2 decision.

In singles consolation play, Agnese Rozite defeated Kim Milla of Delaware, 6-0, 6-2, before dropping her final match to Cornell's Sara Perelman, 6-2, 6-2. Rebecca Breland also picked up a win in the consolation bracket, beating Penn's Jules Rodin 6-3, 6-0 in the first round. The rookie advanced to the third round with a win by default due to injury before falling to Columbia's Katarina Kovacevic, 6-4, 6-3, to complete play.

The Owls are in competition next at the SJU Invitational on Friday-Sunday, September 29-October 1, 2011 at Saint Joseph's University.
